Successful Early Season Soybean Planting and Double-Cropping for Higher Yields

Matt Miles discusses the results of planting soybeans early in the season for the third consecutive year. The beans, planted on February 26th and harvested on July 22nd, have shown promising yields despite a previous year's poor performance due to freezing temperatures.

00:00 So guys, five months ago, uh, here in this very field, we tried something again for the third, for the third year in a row. 00:07 First year was pretty good. Second year kind of sucked to be honest with you. This year it's working out pretty good. 00:12 Uh, we are harvesting our February beans. These beans were planted February the 26th. Uh, this is July the 22nd. 00:20 And, uh, we're harvesting these beans. So, uh, you know, we think we've got a little better yield on what we thought. 00:25 We desiccated them, you know, with three different rates. So we've got three different rates 00:29 of desiccation to look at. You know, the desiccation really worked perfectly on all three, so we'll, we'll talk about 00:34 that a little more at a later date. Not very much shatter. They're cutting really good. I don't know what to say other, I'm excited about the 00:40 harvest and we got our planter set up here waiting on seed. Um, we had some seed that was supposed to bend here. 00:46 It's not here yet. We're we planted a 4.0 going into this thing. We're planting a 4.1 going back out of this thing. 00:52 So two different early, early fours to try to make that second crop come off, you know, sometime by middle of November. 00:58 So, trying the double crop thing again, we think we've got it worked out for this year. If we are successful with it, then that'll be, you know, 01:05 a 66% return. So maybe next year we do it again and we can get to three quarters. This has been a three year project. 01:11 We're gonna keep going with it after this year. We're almost to the point after last year to just saying, Hey, 01:16 let's just throw the towel in. Decided to do it one more year. We were 50 50 after last year. 01:21 Last year soybeans, it got down below, uh, 32 degrees for eight or 10 hours and the soybeans just couldn't handle it. 01:28 First year we done really well on 'em. We had like a 74 bushel on the first crop, A 41 on the second. 01:33 It looks like we're gonna follow somewhere in those same footprints this year. 01:36 We're thinking it's gonna be a little better than that. We'll see when we get all our verified tickets. Planter's gonna come in right behind this soon 01:42 as we get our seed did have a little problems getting a early seed. So the first variety is a, is a 4.0 01:48 and we're going back with a 4.1. So we're, we're trying to double up on those early fours to get these beans out again by November. 01:55 So seed should be here about two o'clock this afternoon. We'll get it treated. We'll definitely 02:00 put a treatment on it. And then we will probably be planting maybe some of this in the night. 02:04 We've got big rains coming for the next three days, supposedly by the weather forecast. So we've gotta get all this done this afternoon 02:11 and tonight, you know, before all the rain set in every day this late is several bushels an acre in yield. 02:17 So the earlier we get 'em planted, the better off we'll be. I think two years ago we planted 'em somewhere 02:22 around the 30th of July. So we're gonna beat that by a week. That's gonna give us another week to get more sides, uh, 02:28 more pods and hopefully get the right weather. So we'll keep you posted on the second crop, but uh, first crop is just about out. 02:36 So you can see we got moisture all the way to the top of the soil and we do have some shattering beans laying around here. 02:42 I'll explain that in a minute. But you can see kind of the side depth. You know, the sidewall here we're about 02:49 what I call three quarters of an inch or three quarters of a joint with the, so they're talking about a lot of rain, I think here, 02:57 rain or no rain that We'll be, be able to get a stand. We're planting these at 165,000. You know, we're not gonna have a lot of daytime left. 03:03 You know, our days are gonna get shorter. So we're hoping to higher population. I know Chad and, and Kevin 03:08 and you know, temple, all the wheat guys, they plant a higher population during wheat. So this is basically after wheat. 03:13 So we bumped it up just a little bit higher. We got a few combine tracks, you know, grain cart tracks where the planter's not gonna run quite as smooth. 03:19 This is real high sand, so it's running pretty smooth even with all those tracks. So guys, now we're here, combines are gone from the field. 03:27 Got everything cut now. We got the planter running behind it. We've got about three hours 03:32 before the future cast says we're gonna get a rain. It's gonna take us about two and a half to three hours to plant this field. 03:38 So, uh, you know, we're gonna be right here getting it done in the nick of time. So we'll see what happens.
