Farming Video | Managing Nitrogen in Cotton During a Wet Year with Matt Miles
2 Jun 252m 36s

Matt Miles gives a boots-on-the-ground update from his cotton field, trialing a new nitrogen strategy (N-Finity) during one of the wettest seasons in years. With cotton at the five-leaf stage and nutrient demands starting to rise, Matt explains how this new tool could help reduce nitrogen leaching and improve plant uptake. He also walks through his latest application of urea, ammonium sulfate, and boron—and shares what he’s watching for as the season progresses.

00:00:00 So guys, I'm pretty excited about where I'm standing here now. So every time we get some kind of new product, you know, 00:00:07 we're always looking for the silver bullet. This is a new product we put out infra. It's a product by nutrient called Infinity, 00:00:15 and it is a, uh, nitrogen stabilizer, fixator. Uh, it makes nitrogen be more available in the soil, plus adds nitrogen to it. 00:00:24 So, uh, we've got this in furrow. It's something we're gonna be watching all year. There's other companies out there 00:00:29 that have the same products. This product has a three modes of action. I've seen the other products work, 00:00:34 so I know this product's gonna work. I just, you know, we're just gonna have to see how it stacks up to, uh, you know, 00:00:40 the other things we're doing. But, uh, we're really excited about seeing it in the infer. The cotton looks good. Uh, we're looking at about, 00:00:48 I don't know, five leaf cotton here right now. There's really not an nitrogen demand for the cotton when it's this young. 00:00:53 So we're not seeing a lot of difference at this moment. But there'll be several more times. We'll come out here and look at this and, uh, 00:00:59 and, uh, analyze it and see what's going on. So, uh, you know, the cotton's a little stung from the dual burn. 00:01:05 We put a, we put application, Liberty and dual on here. Kind of sickened up a little bit, but as you can tell in this plot, it, it don't look too bad. 00:01:13 So we're really excited about trying this new product. The testing that's been done on it in the past looks really good. 00:01:19 This has been one of the wettest years we've dealt with in a long time. As you can tell, the cotton's not really hurting 00:01:25 for any nitrogen right now at the growth stage it's in. But with all the wet weather we've had after planting, you know, we're glad 00:01:31 to have this product on here. We know these kind of products work and we've got a good start to a good cotton crop. 00:01:37 So hopefully this infinity will, uh, make a big difference with a wet year. You have a lot of leaching on nitrogen. 00:01:44 We just put our first application to nitrogen out here day before yesterday. I think it was, uh, we had, we had one 00:01:50 or two days to work in the last 12. So got our application, the first application to nitrogen out here. 00:01:56 I think we ran 90 pounds of urea, 50 pounds of ammonia sulfate and some boron. So, uh, you know, we'll see what goes on with that and, 00:02:04 and how this product works in conjunction with the synthetics. But with all the leeching 00:02:09 and things we've had in our corn so far, this is not just an insurance, but it also is a real way to get nitrogen to your plant 00:02:16 that is biologically done, not synthetically. So it's good for the environment, it's good for the farmer, and you can guarantee those units 00:02:25 'cause they're gonna be there no matter what kind of weather you have. So we'll watch this through the year 70 00:02:29.335 --> 00:02:31.475
