Farming Video | Tackling Double Crop Bean Stress
11 Jun 257m 1s

Chad Henderson chats with agronomist Bert Riggan from Concept AgriTek about tackling tough conditions in double crop beans. With unpredictable weather, their focus is on stress mitigation through early and late-season applications. They’re testing biological-based strategies to boost plant health, improve soil tilth, and support stronger roots. By trialing new tools across multiple stages, they're working to make beans more resilient from the moment they hit the ground.

00:00:00 All right. So it's Chad Henderson here. I'm here with Stream Ag here with Burt Riggins concept. Agritech. Burt, what we gonna talk about today? 00:00:09 Well, as challenging as the weather's been this, this season, I mean, some parts of the world are drowning, some parts are burning up. 00:00:16 I thought it'd be a good time to talk about stress mitigation. It's funny, when we're standing in the field 00:00:20 and we're looking across the field at another field, we've got there and that's actually a field that I do for, that's like my playground. 00:00:27 Mm-hmm. That field is like what we're looking at and y'all can't see it, but it's big old yellow spots in it. And that's supposed to be like a high yield field Bert, 00:00:33 that's out on that one, ain't it? Yeah. You just, I mean, out here in this part of the world with this topography, the clay that you have, 00:00:42 if you've got any kind of depression, it's real hard to get rid of that water. Yeah. So, you know, 00:00:47 You know when it's good, it's good when it, it's real hard to get rid of it when it's not too much either. 00:00:51 'cause it'll plant will use it right up, you know? That's right. But the big thing that me and Burt's gonna work on this year, 00:00:55 and we've been working on for several years, and, and you know what? He helps with the corn program for sure. 00:01:00 But man, we've been like, we gotta bur in our side for these double crop beans. We do. You know? Um, 00:01:05 and we've made somewhere around, you know, if we can get 'em our goal here, there's nothing that we found yet that beets early planting. 00:01:13 Right, right. We know that if we, if I can mess around and get 'em planted the last couple days of May, first couple days of June, we have our best shot. 00:01:21 Well, at that point, that's when Burt comes in and says, Hey, we're gonna start trialing this or trialing that. 00:01:26 You know, we've had several products over year that we brought into the market from that area. You know, because there's nothing more, 00:01:32 I don't feel like there's anything that's more stress than double crop beans. You're right. You're right. 00:01:37 One of the things that we're, we're gonna be looking at this year in a double crop beans scenario, it's a new product for concept. 00:01:43 It's called Verma Boost. Yep. We've tested it. It looks exceedingly, you know. Great. One of the things that we see is, is 00:01:51 that whether you make one application early, like D three V four or you put it in fur, or whether you come back and make an application, you know, 00:02:00 early our stages, you get a positive response. The biggest response is doing it on both the front end and the package. 00:02:07 So talk to me about the structure of this product. What is it in the plant? Is it in plant? Do we have a day frame that it's in the plant? 00:02:15 Do we wanna run it in front of a weather event? Do we want to run it in front of a heat event? Talk to me about the dynamics of it, 00:02:21 Bert. So the dynamics of it, essentially this product, for those of you that are familiar, we have a product called ide. 00:02:27 Yep. You probably used it. Yep. Essentially what we did was we took all of the good components from, you know, worm casting, 00:02:35 firmer compost, whatever you wanna call it. We deconstructed it and then put it back together and then added some positive biology into it. 00:02:42 That helps not only with root stimulation, but also, uh, a big part of it is stress mitigation. The reason why this product works so well is 00:02:51 because you're not really tied to a specific event. You don't have to worry about putting it out ahead of a stress event or putting it out ahead of water. 00:03:00 You can make the early season application, you can make the late season application and it's still gonna do you some good good. 00:03:07 Again, something like double crop beans, we know they're gonna be stressed pretty much the time that they get put in the ground. 00:03:13 So that's why we wanted to look at two applications the early and the late. So We would, you would, so we're gonna put it 00:03:19 in with our herbicide. Mm-hmm. And then we'll come back and put it in again with our fungicide. Correct. Because you know, we're gonna make 00:03:24 that fungicide pass just for, again, plant health and then also for out there for, you know, we'll have some stink bugs moving through in and out. 00:03:32 Or we'll have a, you know, I'm gonna tell you, you don't think really that, I know they're beneficial, but still we almost need to make that application just 00:03:39 for pyrethroid to help us with fire ants. Sure. I mean, do you have, I mean, I know fire ants are good, 00:03:44 but boy they ain't good on that cutter bar. The thing about fire ants, unless you're growing sugarcane, you really don't like 00:03:50 to see 'em because they can cause so much problems to everything else. They, yes, they are predators, 00:03:55 but in row crops we have a lot more tools at our disposal as opposed to somebody like that. 00:04:00 That's right. That's right. But we're going to make two applications. What kind of rate we talking about on this product? 00:04:05 So this is gonna be a quart per acre. Okay. So what you're getting out of it is you're getting stress mitigation from 00:04:11 a several different angles. You're getting it from the biology, you're getting it from the fact that it's gonna enhance the tilt of your soil, 00:04:17 which will allow your roots to peg down farther. Especially if you're in a dry land situation or you're planting in a time of year 00:04:24 where moisture is at a premium. You want the roots to be able to peg down. So that's, that's two things right there. 00:04:32 The third thing is, is that because of the way that the worm castings of wormer compost in this product work together, 00:04:42 you also get your stimulation of the root. That's a combination of that plus the biology that's in it. And then the fact that that plant is set up 00:04:53 a lot better to tolerate stress because it has more avenues to draw from during a stress event. 00:05:01 So would I be better off running this or can I run this in a burn down application too? Or would you, do you still wanna see it on the plant? 00:05:07 When we talk about till then we're talking about what we're doing to the soil. Do we want this? What don't hit the plant 00:05:12 to get on everything else? Is that what you're looking at? To be honest with you, we hadn't really looked at 00:05:17 the burn down option. We're exploring that this year in some places. Okay. Um, Guess what? 00:05:22 You're gonna see it from me. Alright. That's, that's awesome. The product works whether it goes on the plant or not. 00:05:29 Yeah. Because the, the biology and the actual verma compost component of it are gonna be active in the soil. 00:05:36 Yeah. Once the plant gets in there, then everything's good. Yeah. The later season is 00:05:42 where the foliar application really comes into play and can provide you with that late season stress mitigation that you're looking 00:05:49 For. I think me and you just found our avenue for burn boost, we gonna have it, we would go out there 00:05:54 and we burn down from our wheat stub. Yep. Have some in it there for, for trial. We'll have some in it, the herbicide application. Mm-hmm. 00:06:01 And then we'll have some in it, the fungicide application and start piggybacking them around 00:06:05 to see what we can come up with. I think that's the way we're gonna try. Yep. And like I said, you know, that's the whole purpose 00:06:10 of testing is try to figure out what combination of applications are gonna work best based on the, the crop you're fooling with. 00:06:19 Yep. And in this case, and, And with that, the soil type that you're thinking, The soil types, the whole nine yards, you know, 00:06:24 and with us picking double crop beans, that right there is really gonna tell us just how much you know, this, 00:06:31 this product has the potential to help. Yep. Well I'm good with that bur. Yeah. Good to have y'all out here from Field Day to today. 00:06:38 We're gonna look forward to doing some trial work and we're gonna get concept out there. You know, they've been good concept Agritech has been good 00:06:43 to me and man, it's been good to work with people like that. If you don't know 'em, hadn't met with 'em, give 'em a call. 00:06:48 They got some good agronomists, good sales people, you know, can answer. They've answered a lot of questions on my farm 00:06:53 to help me through a lot of struggles. 00:06:55.845 --> 00:06:56.845
