BUILDING A FACTORY
9 Jun 232 min 48 sec

Temple is doing his first root dig of the season in his NCGA plot. It's been cool and dry since planting, so he wants to see if the plant is building a factory below ground.

00:00 So this is my grower standard practice. This particular field, I'm gonna do a root dig here real quick for you. 00:06 This was planted about 22 days ago, 21, 22 days ago. Um, this is a DEI variety 113 day. Um, 00:15 this is a variety that I did well with an N C G A. We're actually in my plot for my n cga this year. Um, I'm actually standing here, so I'm gonna do one here. This is planted again. 00:24 I don't know if I said it already or not, cuz I got a d d bad. Um, it's 39,500 is what this particular plot is planted at. 00:32 So let's see what the roots look like in this system. Cause I haven't done it yet. I'd like to know. Uh, you'll get that. I mean, you're not gonna get every root for sure. I mean, 00:43 you can get more when the soil's wet, you know, out, but you can't get 'em all. So we wash 'em off. 00:49 We'll just take a bucket of water out here and wash 'em off so we can kind of get as many of 'em out of the dirt as possible so we can get kind of a good idea 00:56 of what it really looks like. Doesn't look bad. I mean, we're getting some serious root system in there. Um, I'd say I got my system on point, you know, as far as my, my, 01:08 uh, infer program. You know, it lacks a few things, you know, but it's, it's getting better all the time. Um, again, 01:17 this is one reason that we, we use radiate. We feel like it really stimulates the root growth, you know, for a young man. You know, when you get in a cool wet conditions, 01:27 sometimes what you actually need to do is you need to pay attention to what's going on because sometimes it ends up growing more underneath the ground than it 01:37 is on top to ground. And you think your plant's not growing at all, but the whole entire time it's sitting there building a factory. 01:43 And that's what we found that out in soybeans, probably more so than we have corn. Um, cuz corn, uh, you know, corn con jump outta the ground and show you that, 01:51 show you what it's lacking in a little bit. It, it's, it's a little more evident with soybean. Sometimes you go and you dig a plant up and you're like, you know, holy crap, 02:00 you know, it's bigger underground than it is on top of the ground and that's actually not a bad thing. And this goes back to Matt Miles's, you know, 02:07 planting early and you get some of that environmental stunning, you know, um, I'm getting ready to go look at beans here in a second. Uh, 02:15 on a contest beans that we're doing and those particular beans I'm getting ready to do, uh, not environmental setback. Um, you know, 02:24 Matt Plants really, really early, sets em back environmentally. I try to do that as much as possible, 02:30 but I didn't get a chance to do that in this particular field. So I'm gonna go out there and I'm gonna explain to what, what we do, 02:36 where we go in and we artificially burn back, um, our soybean. So we'll be back to you in a minute with some soybeans.
