Are you getting good sprayer coverage? (Part 1)

Chad says he can see a fog behind him when spraying, but he admits that he really doesn't know if he is getting proper coverage when it comes to foliar applications. He's going to find out in this 2 part episode with Nick from Pentair Hypro.

00:00 Hey coming at you with our latest experiment and trial that extreme acts putting on at Henderson farms in Madison, Alabama 00:07 that of course is Chad Henderson, you know him you've seen him on all those videos. We did some pretty cool stuff today alongside a trial with 00:13 this new AGCO sprayer. We are doing something with Pentair. This is Nick flights agranos for Pentair and Nick at one point you 00:22 made me and Chad stop the sprayer and we dumped this into the spray tank. And then you said we're gonna come back at dusk and test stuff. Why did 00:28 we do what we did and what do we hoping to find out? Yes, so it's a clear die that's gonna illuminate under a black light. And so 00:34 the goal is to put it in spray it out over the crop and it's gonna help visualize coverage. We talk about coverage all the time. But 00:40 do you really know what good coverage is or bad coverage from the cabin? We can say a fog we say a fog 00:46 or a mist or big droplets, you know, but do we know coverage? I know that Jed and I were sitting in there running the rig and look that's it. Looks like it's covering pretty 00:52 good because I mean, let's face it you got these nozzles are blowing out there. It's covering good but this is actually more 00:58 scientific. So tell me how it works because you've got a Different nozzles, you're the nozzle guy. We even changed out some miles. Why 01:04 do we do what we did and then again how we're gonna check the results. Yeah. So we put a couple common standard nozzles, you 01:10 would use for fungicide spring finer droplet designed for higher coverage. We put one with the coarser droplet would 01:16 be more drip reduction Focus. So we're gonna see what that difference looks like in the crop canopy and how 01:22 it interacts with the weather conditions. It's high 80s today. It's been a little dry around here humidity is not too bad. So there's 01:28 potential for a lot of spray droplet evaporation with those fine or droplets. So in the past when I've done this I've seen with finer droplets on hot sunny days the coverage 01:37 not be as good due to evaporation. So we're going to test that in the soybeans and corn as well to see what 01:43 the weather nozzle and interaction is with coverage in the crop can Nick this is the one that we took off and they are replaced and you call it was a 01:52 dual something. It's a dual fan nozzle. It's called The Guardian air twin and then we replaced some of them just for experimentation on the left 01:58 side of the boom with a different and I was involved in that, you know. Extreme act guys got really excited. They saw me actually 02:03 do some sort of thing that mimic manual labor. Anyway, what were those fans or those nozzles gonna do so the other 02:09 one is just a standard flat fan nozzle basic nozzle. Everybody's used to them used to spraying with them. And then the other one is called the ultra low drift. It's an air induction 02:18 more of a drip reduction type nozzle would use more commonly for systemic herbicide. We come back here where we are safe. 02:24 For instance this pass right here. We're gonna look over one side and see an area that was tree with one nozzle on another and you think we shove that 02:30 black light over we're gonna find out that some of the drops got further down the Plant we're gonna find out that some of them actually got down to the ground where we going 02:36 to discover. I think we're gonna see a difference and droplet density on the leaf surface. How many droplets per square inch we want that right? 02:42 We want to high droplet density for fungicide spraying because the majority of our fungicides are contact or very 02:48 locally systemic so they don't move very far within the plant from where those droplets land. So we need that High coverage. I think we may see a difference in where the droplets land 02:57 if they just coat the top of the canopy or Get down deeper into the canopy. All right, and the ones that we want to get the nozzle we want to get deeper down is the 03:06 well find out but I think it's gonna be this one the guardian air twin with the dual fan spray pattern or potentially the ultra low drift because I think it's going to withstand evaporation 03:15 here Chad. Have you done something like this before and do you think that there's a lot of results and our actual once you 03:21 find out the results you can actually then change your practices and get better yield. Well, we have we do this thing before, you know, I'll get my 03:27 son Jackson to get out there and standing fan. We just spray over, you know, and then the next pass let's pray over your mind just making squat down and spray over him again, you know before 03:33 and that way we see how far it's getting down, you know, and he's done pretty good with the whole deal. You know, he's got a little twitch every once in a while. But other than that, you know, he's 03:39 he's made me see so you obviously want to get the stuff down through there. I think it's down to Jackson the boots and then you know that you're getting 03:45 all the way down the crop. That's right. He's got some little bit legs, you know, he's got a little bit legs like me, you know, so if we get coverage on 03:51 it, we're good to go. But no we don't get a chance to do this kind of stuff a lot. You know, we just have to take what people say like Nick 03:57 this done this trial work. We haven't really had a chance to really do this or sales, you know, see what it does. So, you know, they put out a lot 04:03 of good test on this and we kind of just take his word for it. We're Is using tips up, you know, everybody everybody forgets 04:09 to change out their tips, you know, they change oil they check air, they check everything else but they forget to work that the tips were out as well. It's kind of 04:15 thing the normal farmer that's not doing experiments. Like we are extreme AG should do himself or herself 04:21 or the should they rely on our kind of experimentation. I mean how important is this to the average person that they 04:27 would actually want to take the time to do this? I think it's good to do both take what other people have done and learn from it. But then also I 04:33 think it's good to implement it on your own farm with your own crop your own weather conditions. It's not expensive blue dies. It's not expensive green 04:39 blue. Whatever color. Yeah, you buy it online anybody can get it, you know, the the spraying conditions are different every 04:45 year they're different in north Alabama than they are in South Dakota right or in Kentucky where I'm at. And so it's good to do it on your own farm 04:51 with your own spray or your own practices. So that's exactly how your sprayers perform. I think a person shoots skeet or Sporting Clay. It's 04:57 kind of like patterning your gun. You know what it looks like. When how do you know what you're shooting and tell you actually pattern again and all that. So 05:03 we're gonna come back after dark. I'm gonna take a black light out. And we're gonna see some some coverage and we're gonna really know what the 05:09 results are and then their listener viewer of extreme management keep up with that. Is there anything that we need to prep them on before they come 05:15 back after dark? Nope. Let's just hold tight. See what happens. All right, so stay tuned. You know what next time you see us. It's gonna be Dusk and 05:21 we're gonna be out here arm to the black light probably wearing some white lab coats is gonna be getting really scientific and we're gonna be finding out what the distribution of sprayers look 05:27 like with pentairs Nick flights and Chad Henderson and me. Dami Mason for extreme egg.
