Interested in upgrading your planter fertility system? Kelly and Mike stopped in the

CapstanAg

booth at Farm Progress earlier this year to talk about their experience with the SelectShot system and the new precision system they recently installed on their sprayer.

00:00 Hi, this is Kelly Garrett from extreme mag. We're here at the farm progress show today with capstan ag and what we're here to talk about is the 00:06 select shot system that they installed on our planets. I'm here with Mike Evans of integrated egg and Brian Finch from a 00:12 capstan egg. I'm Gonna Let Brian tell you a little bit about this election. All right. Thanks Kelly. 00:16 So capstan designed the select shot with the goal in mind and being able to address each seed as it's being planted. So our whole goal is to be able to 00:25 apply a dose per seed and the ability that we're able to do that with is per seed both relative to the seed and 00:33 how much volume we want to put down. And so that's what we've we've actually tried to to address here and in doing that 00:39 we've been able to control the not just how much but the concentration in the placement which allows us to use less product. If we really need to sometimes even as 00:48 much as 15 to 25% savings your marketing says that depending on acres and fertility budget the system will pay itself off in about 00:57 a year and a half right and what we saw this year in our operation my brother-in-law Chad install it I'm gonna let Mike talk 01:03 to you about that. We can really back up that year and a half State. Yeah just in Chad was probably we're 01:09 putting on five gallon an acre typically as well. Our program was well, we put the selection on there. We decided to go back to three gallon an 01:15 acre. and with that concentrated stream potentially get that five to six gallon effect with the seed. So he bought about 68 6900 gallons 01:25 worth of product prepaid it then we put this system on and then he ended up with about 4,600 is what he ended up using. So huge safe big savings. I 01:34 think we're spending around 25 to 20 bucks an acre with this product. So you do the math just on the product savings alone. So depending 01:40 on the on the population that you're planting at your row spacing and you're giving operation. It is very much possible to be able to get those Savings in that year 01:49 and a half time for you. Absolutely. We have the proof of that, you know, a lot of variables like you say population Acres budget all 01:55 of that but this system will pay itself off it actually made the planner run better. I was skeptical there's so much technology on these planners. 02:04 We feel like our window is tight. We want to get it done and I was nervous about putting more technology on with the planner works great with planters. 02:13 We're making a pass through the field and the whole idea is we want to minimize the number of passes because that's more money in your pocket as a 02:19 producer, right? So in putting infural applications on there, there's some risks that you run into some of them being fertility or seed mortality that you're going to run 02:28 into and we're also going to be applying across the whole the whole Furrow length. 02:33 What we wanted to do was be able to say hey, we know where that seeds coming through and the singulation and placement is 02:39 so accurate nowadays with modern technology very much that we can actually trigger a shot off of that seed coming past the seed sensor and 02:48 do the math behind it to be able to make sure that we're putting it right where we want it and it's adjustable within the display. So in the disability thing fertility if the seeds are six inches apart, 02:57 we're not wasting that fertility in the middle, right? Yep. So we're targeting that sweet spot to get the most out of our starter fertilizer that 03:03 we could possibly get. And the rest of it is really just the math and the algorithm to make sure we're doing it or wanting to 03:09 do I think the other benefit that we've seen going into 2023 Kelly's gonna put we're gonna put it on to the 03:15 big planters. Now, the big corn planters was the fact the operationally, you know, like Chad went from five gallon to three gallon. Well that's less fills the day less when 03:24 we're trying to his farm trying to keep three plant corn planters going right. It's a lot of work a lot of manpower. 03:30 We're hoping to reduce that Manpower somewhat and be more efficient through the day and I think that's why the capstan is another bonus to what it's doing in Furrow versus on the outside of the 03:39 apartment operation. Yeah, the added efficiencies a nice hidden bonus that we received. Sure. Yeah, and if you're looking at having liquid as 03:45 a part of your program any efficiency that you can gain on there to match up with how you're tendering your plant or that's that's 03:51 just time in your pocket. So I spoke at a field day in Alabama in December and I'm in an operator down there that had their pinpoint 2 technology 03:59 on his head and we had recently purchased a Hagee and then starting work with capstan things like that. And we were wanting our two sprayers to talk to each other our John Deere and Hagee we chose 04:08 to put the pinpoint 2 on yeah, so we're you know, Kelly's got a lot of big fields 400 500 acre fields that we study Farms. So logically we 04:17 wanted to get two sprayers in the field. They'd be more efficient one tender truck all the things they go with it. So we wanted the 04:23 machines to talk through the John Deere system. But we also wanted that boom control across the whole boom. That's all by 04:29 now. So because they'll be overlapping and stuff and we're putting on a lot of chemicals and things we want to be really efficient pinpoint to 04:35 fit in right perfect with it very seamless to put on very simple to work on. We have you know, obviously competitive product on the other machine and we fought and 04:45 fought it and really the pinpoint two system has been really just a dream to work with, you know, we I think we replace one valve this 04:51 year and at one little computer glitch we restarted it and away we went so it was really seamless to work 04:57 with. Pinpoint has been something that capstan's been selling for over 10 years now actually since 2008 was when we 05:03 did the initial development on the original pinpoint system. And then you guys have the pinpoint 2 system which is a the next generation of 05:09 that we can do larger numbers of valves higher capacity valves things along those lines, but the whole idea was sprayer technology wasn't at the individual nozzle level 05:18 yet when we were doing all of that development and so we had to be able to integrate onto platforms that maybe just had sectional control and do 05:27 everything in the background behind there. So it's been a really really great fit on a lot of machines out there to be able to bring in 05:33 that individual nozzle mapping resolution on off resolution Without The Machine side really having to worry about having that processing power necessary to 05:42 be able to do it at high speeds which when we're talking about sprayers, we're starting to talk about high speeds. So yeah, so pulse with modulation individual 05:51 and also control the valve Diagnostics to let you know if something's not working and goes on and retrofit. On to what's already out there and already works. 06:00 Well has been a great fit. Thank you, Brian. Thank you.
