Can a Coconut Reduce Crop Stress? Well, Sort of

In 1986, Lee Lubbers became the first farming family to plant soybeans in his area of west river South Dakota. He hasn't looked back since.  This year, Lee is once again making his own history as he is able to produce a soybean crop in one of the driest years on record.  It all comes down to stress mitigation, and that is why he is trialing a new product from Pro Farm (formerly Marrone Bio Innovations) that is designed to get soybeans through a tough year like this. 

00:00 Hey friends. Today. We're talking about Innovations in soybean production and we happen to be doing it with a pretty Innovative 00:06 guy. His name is Lee lubbers. One of the founders of extreme AG. We're in Gregory South Dakota one of his Bean fields. We're also with the good folks from Pro Farm 00:16 formerly known as maroon bio and we're talking about utilizing Biologicals to increase yield and improve our stand as well. As our soil here 00:25 in soybean production Lee. You said something before we hit record. I thought was pretty cool. You were the first farming operation to plant soybeans in 00:34 this part of the world. They did not grow soybeans and Gregory South Dakota until 1986. You said we're gonna plant soybeans. The neighbor said you're crazy take 00:43 me from there. We were traditionally forage cops and corn and oats and in 1986 the year, I would graduated 00:52 high school. Actually, we planted 700 Acres of soybeans and everybody says, you're nuts. Why you planting that what are you gonna do with that? 01:00 All right, and you said well if you got Hogs? If you're using soybean meals a protein stores, there is a need for these soybeans out here in the world. And then you did 01:11 700 Acres tell me how it turned out surprisingly well, and that's when we really cut back a notes production and we expanded more into soybeans 01:21 in the lineup and we've never looked back and then we've evolved into no-till. Yeah. 01:26 So back, then you did more tillage 86 seems to me that's about when we're starting to say. Hey put them in a drill. Don't put them in 30 inches. How'd you do them and 1986 we started 01:35 out actually planting in 38 inch rows because that's what we had and then we evolved into Drilling and Rowing and we did numerous trials 01:44 for years and now we are using no-till air seaters. So right now the field we're standing in there's no till you are almost 01:53 100% Motel across all of your acres and you talked to me about that in a previous recording you said first off labor you cover a lot of acres and you don't want to 02:02 have a bunch of people secondly moisture preservation thirdly soil biology. So you're all about the no-till tell 02:08 me about what happened with this soybean field we're standing in this field was corn last year and actually 02:14 in this field we had trials with paces that are on corn and we saw 6% increase even with the late season drought. Okay, 02:23 so you use their product in the corners. Last year, you said you saw a 6% increase in yield? Okay six percent increase in yield by that you would attribute it 02:32 to the stress mitigation right opponent of PACE Center. Yeah, and now this year we have soybeans we know tilled into the residue and 02:38 now we're doing Haven which is a water utilization stress mitigation product that they just came out with and we're working 02:47 with it on our soybeans here in the background. Alright, so he put on Haven so you come out here and he's all about Innovation. Remember he 02:53 doesn't right Lee doesn't mind if people think he's crazy. They thought that 86 we put out soybeans and did well with them you came 02:59 around and said, let's use Haven. What is Haven? It is a sterile alcohol. Okay. Well once it's into the planet converts to steric acid, which is 03:08 a component of cuticle, which is what's going to protect our thing. Yeah. Well plants have those two. Okay. So what 03:17 happens when you put this product and you apply it how it's full here application? Okay and put this 03:23 on the yeah, we put it on in the veget. Leave stages. Did you combine it with a herbicide treatment at that time Standalone passed because 03:31 we want to see how the product works on its own so that way we don't distort our test it have to be Standalone. In 03:37 other words. It doesn't have compatibility issue. It does it does not have compatibility issues. We mix it in other crops with 03:43 other nutrient. We've done it with herbicides. We've done it with fungicide. Okay. So there's no compatibility insecticides as well. So he did it just stand 03:52 alone. And you did that about a month ago three weeks ago. Really? Yeah. All right, then, what do we expect them to see here Brian? Okay. So we're gonna first of 04:01 all we see a water regulation and less stress due to lack of moisture. 04:09 And that's again has to do with the cuticle. And then there's also the bio-nutrients in charge of water regulation. 04:18 I know you're supposed to get a spade to do this. But this looks like a healthy plant for this stage of its life. And this climatological Zone 04:24 here. We are shooting this the very end of July is this what I should expect to see you happy with this Lee forgetting about 40 hundreds of rain 04:33 and about last 40 days. I'm pretty happy that you've had less than a quarter of it. You've had let you know what less than a half in less than half inch or rain in the last month and 04:42 10 days. Yeah, and this plant looks fine to me is that can we attribute part of that to the stress mitigation property? Right? So the soybean plant goes all 04:51 the way through the season checking itself out. Do I have enough water and nutrients to keep going? Okay, so 04:57 it's going to keep flowers if it's if it feels stress, it loses a flower later on if it feels stress, it loses pods. If it feels stress 05:06 later on it lose seat. It doesn't fill the Pod completely and then there's also pod feel season. So a plant like soybean is constantly checking 05:15 every day to see how am I doing? How I doing Lee doesn't get mad very easily but given the stress with no rain and the fact that I 05:24 just pull out two plans for this demo. He got a little test. He's like that's a bushel. That's a bushel of beans. I just think idea you costing us 05:33 money. Yeah. What do you think? Just you know, we talk about when you do something long enough it become standard practice What's it gonna take for this Haven product becomes standard practice on your 05:45 soybean acres Lee. We've got numerous trials this year. So we will learn from this year and then we'll be comfortable with it because it's a low-cost product. You 05:54 know, he mentioned it's sterile alcohol is a main ingredient to do it for years a farming when it gets dry. Usually 06:03 you go for alcohol the old fashioned kind. Well, we're going to try something Biologicals sterile. Byproduct. What is this stuff Brad? Well sterile alcohol. 06:20 the component of it comes from coconut extract and so well coconut oil. So from the coconut Plantation right down the road here in Gregory. 06:29 Sure just down the road 5,000 miles. All right, so that's the main component mean component mean ingredient is actually from coconut. Yes, correct 06:38 drive from coconut oil what will be success to you alleviating stress in the plant and and leading to yield increases and 06:47 Increase for you, I mean steering in all seriousness. What's a what's a good average yield here for you in this part of the world. I mean, 06:57 we've hit some super high yields if we get the rain, I mean, we broke hundred bushels before but being 07:03 dry here if we could go and get 40 bushel of beans versus 35. That's huge. That's a huge increase. I mean, if you're if you're 07:12 if you're not using this product, it leaves 35 bushel and it gets you to get you that five bushels at 14 bucks. There's you know, so no brainer. So there's really 07:21 no limitations on on usage other than to get it out there with the right time. Right and that you said is before our three, correct? Okay you position this you position this 07:30 as a water utilization product meaning it's gonna prevent stress or help you get through stressful periods of no rain that's important out here where you 07:39 get 10 and a half inches of rain a year like you did last year. I'm in Northeastern, Indiana. I get 38 07:45 inches of precipitation. I don't think I have that big of a problem. I don't think I need Haven answer me on that. Well, I think one of the things 07:54 even when you do get adequate rain, you know, you do want to keep the temperature lower in the canopy whether it be corn or soybeans and by doing that 08:03 you keep that plant happy and healthy throughout the rest of the season Haven can control temperature Ryan. This is what I talked about. The thicker cuticle is going to prevent changes 08:14 in soil in leaf temperature. Okay, so actually it'll keep it'll help because the thickness of the leaf or it'll keep me a little cooler down 08:23 here underwear feet are exactly all right if I have irrigation and I not only get 38 inches of precipitation where I live in Indiana, but also I have 08:32 irrigation out there. Do I need Haven? Yeah, I would look at it also, because if you're maximizing your water retention, that's also 08:41 nutrient retention keeping the canopy cool. You're keeping your plants from having a bad day. Even if I have the irrigation and I get adequate precipitation. I still 08:50 have a stress environment. Try to maximize your plant got it.
