Farming Video | Why Accurate Planting Data Matters More Than Ever

We're out in the corn planter in the field, and I was just showing him how we use 00:00:07 Work Planner in the cab and how important it is to the operation, his operation, obviously. 00:00:13 Loading it into the machines. I prefaced it earlier saying that the guys run long hours, 14-hour days sometimes, and easy use and the importance of the data 00:00:38 being accurate. Absolutely. Everybody planting a crop across all the United States is going to work probably a minimum of a 12-hour day if they're 00:00:48 working a full day. Yep. It could be a 16, 18-hour day in some places if rain's coming and things like that, and we still want to maintain the quality that we expect, the quality of the 00:00:57 work being done in the field, of course, and then the quality of the data, because we're going to use that data further on down the road for research, we're going to 00:01:04 use that data for a carbon program. We're going to use that data when we pull the yield samples, things like that, the yield data this fall. We're going to use that data more spots. 00:01:14 This is the baseline of the data, so even though an operator is putting in 100-hour work week, 00:01:19 we still need to maintain the quality of all these things. And I'll tell you from my time in the cab, when you get tired and you wore out and 00:01:25 there's too many things going on, the first thing that falls is managing the data. And what you've showed me here so far today, 00:01:33 this program, Work Planner, on JD Ops, it streamlines it and it makes it easy for them to use too, and the easier it is, the better job they'll do. 00:01:44 Well, one thing I always think of is how many cropping decisions are made in the combine- Mm-hmm 00:01:49 ... or before the combine even hits the field this fall for 2027, right? We're trying to make decisions in the cab 00:01:57 without really good data, and the Work Planner keeps everything accurate. Yep. 00:02:01 Just how many crop decisions you make now before harvest is done. Absolutely. Where are we going to put the beans next year? 00:02:09 Where are we going to put the winter wheat next year? Are we going to use this variety of corn? A lot of times, a seed company will want us to make at least part of 00:02:17 our seed order before we've ever harvested. Well, if we know exactly where all the hybrids are and we can go out and scout and look at those, we can help make those decisions. 00:02:27 The better the data is, the easier it is to do our job as managers. Yeah, and I think kudos to John Deere and the team at Operations 00:02:35 Center. They've really made it a lot better. I've been working in data management for 20 years, and they're realizing the promise that I started in about 00:02:44 20 years ago. The one thing that I really like, I used to not like this. My dad never liked this. Putting two tractors and planters in the same field because of the overlap, 00:02:54 and then also because of you seem like you're moving twice as much. Well, really, 00:02:59 that's a net zero, the moving part. But if we can put two tractors and planters in the same field, I wouldn't want to put them in a small field. 00:03:06 Yep. But two tractors and planters in a large field like this, and then they can work and move together, there's a lot of value there because when we're tending 00:03:13 them with seed, tending them with fuel, tending them with the in-furrow that we put on, things like that, there's value in having them right there because it 00:03:21 almost takes less help to do that. So the shared work list between the different machines when we have two in the same field makes us more efficient outside the, 00:03:32 not just the planting, but the tender operation becomes more efficient and easier to accomplish.
