Farming Video | Tweaking Cover Crop Rates to Boost Corn Yields

20 Oct 250m 53s

Jacob Appleberry with Live Oak Ag is out in the field dialing in his fall cover crop mix for corn—kale, camelina mustard, and more. While the base rate's 35 lbs/acre, he’s testing a few variable rate passes based on past corn yield maps. The goal? See if those poor-yielding spots are tied to compaction, drainage, or maybe even some heavy metal buildup in the soil. It's all about figuring out how to give next year's corn the best shot, and he’ll keep us posted through the winter on how it shakes out.

00:00:00 Hey guys, Jacob here with Live Oak Ag. Today we're putting out our corn mix, uh, true to kale, camelina mustard, 00:00:07 and kale base rate's about 35 pounds the acre, but we're trying something a little bit different. We looked at some yield history on corn, 00:00:16 and we're gonna try a few passes, uh, variable rate in it, looking at the reason for maybe some low yields 00:00:23 or some high yields, especially some of the lower yields. Maybe we either have a, some compaction issues, 00:00:29 some internal drainage, maybe some water holding capacity problems, or if we've got a possibility of a, 00:00:34 of a heavy metal build up and we're trying to break that pan out and get rid of that. So maybe we have a better corn crop. 00:00:41 So we'll send you a video whenever we get it up. We'll see what it looks like through the winter. 00:00:46.085 --> 00:00:47.725
