Farming Video | Beating the Heat with Terramar: Johnny Verell’s Soybean Strategy

30 Jul 251m 57s

Johnny Verell of XtremeAg shares his strategy for combating extreme heat stress in soybeans using Terramar, a seaweed and carbon-based product from Agricen. Johnny explains how he applied Terramar during herbicide passes across high-management zones to help cool the canopy and maintain flower and pod retention during critical flowering stages. With the South’s unpredictable heatwaves, Johnny’s looking for ways to keep beans, corn, and cotton healthy under stress. He plans to evaluate Terramar's ROI by taking it all to yield and seeing how it performs under real-world conditions.

00:00:00 Johnny Verell Extreme Ag. I'm out here today at a field day that we're gonna have here in a few weeks 00:00:05 and we're looking at different plots we had. And on this side of the field here, we actually did a product with Gerson, a product 00:00:10 of Gerson's called Terramar. And we did this product across our high management, uh, high management zone of this field 00:00:16 where we're gonna really push the beans. And one reason we, we did the terramar is we were trying to see if we could help mitigate stress from heat. 00:00:22 And a couple weeks ago we had some extremely high temperatures. You know, we were in that 95 00:00:26 to 98 degrees for several days there. And talking to Scott Lay and different ones with the Reson, they were telling me 00:00:31 that this would be a prime time to go out there and, and actually uh, apply the, the terramar. So we actually put it out 00:00:36 with a herbicide pass across these beans and you know, and I was talking to Scott and he was trying to tell me all the different 00:00:41 beneficials that we're gonna have out of it. But the biggest thing I took away from it is it actually will help the plant cool the canopy. 00:00:47 And so when you're getting them temperatures up there close to a hundred degrees like we were during that time, 00:00:50 we're prime flowering time of the year like we were. That could be huge. We're actually got it going out on corn also. 00:00:57 And we're actually gonna put it out on cotton and just basically try to take away is here in the south where we get these extreme high temperatures. 00:01:02 Sometimes they last three or four days, sometimes they can last three or four weeks. When that happens, it are their products 00:01:07 that we can put out there to really help mitigate that stress. You know, a lot of these products have got a seaweed base in 00:01:12 them and a carbon base in them, and Terramar actually takes both those technologies, puts 'em together and really helps keep this plant healthier 00:01:18 and at a cooler temperature. And that's what we're looking for out here to try to see if we can help hold more pods 00:01:23 and hold more flowers throughout this period of this crop. So these beans are looking really good right now. 00:01:27 It's been cool the last week or so, so they're not been stressed. If another stress event comes, 00:01:31 we're actually gonna apply it again. That's the best time to do is right before a stress event go 00:01:36 out there and try to help that crop. So we'll see how it goes. We're taking it all to yield to see what it is, 00:01:40 because at the end of the day, if the R i's not there, it doesn't really matter. But what we've seen in the test that they've showed us, 00:01:45 it's really gonna help pay off. Maybe not in every year, but in years when you have this 00:01:49.355 --> 00:01:51.555
