Farming Video | Temple Rhodes Experiments With a New Soil Health Timing and Gets Results

11 Nov 253m 14s

Temple Rhodes is back, and this time he’s putting Holganix Breakdown to the test in a new way. Instead of the standard two-part system—fall residue breakdown and spring biology—Temple tried simplifying things by applying the product during a late-season Y-drop pass he was already making. That way, he avoided an extra trip across the field. The results? A 7-bushel bump compared to the traditional fall/spring method. In this video, he shares why it’s working for his soil health program and how it’s helping him push even further on fertility cuts.

00:00:00 Hey guys, it's Temple. So, um, let me tell you something that, that I did. This is a Holganix video on the, the breakdown. 00:00:09 You know, they have a breakdown product the way that Holganix has their system now. Um, I, I guess kind of, I'm trying 00:00:16 to reinvent the wheel somewhat. Um, I'm trying to make it easier process for me to be able to put it on somewhere versus, um, right now the way 00:00:24 that they're doing it as, as the moment, it's a two piece part. So one, you put it on as fall breakdown 00:00:30 and you break down your residue and then you come back in the spring and then you add some more biology to the soil 00:00:36 and you're waking up the soil. It's all about soil health. And does it work? Yes, it works. From what we've seen with these trials 00:00:42 that we run all the time, yes, we've seen it work tremendously. Work. It not only works it, you know, it improves in ROI, 00:00:49 it healthies up our soil and we are definitely cutting back on fertility for sure. And of an environment like where I am, 00:00:56 where we are already cutting way back on fertility, it's allowed me to even cut back further. Or, you know, the amount of fertility that I've cut back, 00:01:04 it's waking up my soil and maybe I'm getting a little bit more something out of my soil that I couldn't get before. 00:01:09 So remember what I told you two pieces. One in the fall as a breakdown, one in the spring prior to planting all about soil health. 00:01:17 For a lot of farmers in the north, it's a little hard to get a combine or, or let's back up a sprayer, sorry. Um, to chase a combine. 00:01:26 A lot of our, our, our sprayers are already winterized. They're put in the shed or we're making an extra pass. Us as farmers, 00:01:34 we don't really wanna make a lot of extra paces. So I thought maybe I can reinvent the wheel a little bit. Maybe I can apply this Hogans product somewhere else 00:01:43 besides after the combine and maybe get some type of a benefit. Did we find it? I feel like we did. 00:01:50 Um, so what I did was, is I put it down in the spring and I put it down in my late season wire drop. I did that because I was aiding to a trip 00:02:03 that I was already making across the field. I didn't wanna make that extra trip. So I thought maybe if I could still put it out there 00:02:10 and still get something out of it, it would be great. Now, is it gonna break down my residue? No, not necessarily. But if I have to put it on twice in a year, 00:02:19 I felt like it would be a better place for me. Well, according to my trials, and I'll, I'll try to put this on there. 00:02:25 This is all my trials that I did on that farm. So my wholeganics check where I didn't, I did it the old way. 00:02:33 It was 265 bushel and this, and it was 32 rows. Its replicated twice, 32 rows all the way down the field. Then I went in there with a late season wide drop 00:02:42 and I put it in the late season wide drop, and it was not on the fall applied. Um, I skipped that and I went to this. 00:02:50 Well guys, I can tell you right now there's a seven bushel increase and you guys can see it. 00:02:56 This is real. I don't know what it's doing, But maybe we found a different way to get this into our program without aiding an extra trip. 00:03:04 So, um, we're gonna keep studying on this and we're gonna keep letting you know how it's turning out 00:03:08.605 --> 00:03:08.845
