Texas farmer Todd Kimbrell is seeding sesame into wheat stubble and sharing a boots-on-the-ground view of the challenges that come with it. From dialing in vacuum settings to handling ultra-tiny seeds, it’s all about precision. He’s running high populations and in-furrow water to help boost germination—seeing sprouts pop in just 2 days. With 130 days to harvest, it’s all about starting strong and staying ahead.

00:00:00 Todd Kimmel in Texas. Extreme Mag here with, uh, Garrett Gunnel of Sesco right here. 00:00:06 Plant sesame today into our wheat stubble. Going through some challenges trying to get the seed set. This stuff is really tiny. 00:00:13 Uh, look how squa the seed is trying to get the vacuum set. All right. Uh, tell 'em what we're doing for population. 00:00:24 For population. I think we're putting out around two pounds an acre, 350,000 seeds per acre. Uh, pretty high population. 00:00:32 Um, we're also running in furrow water on this stuff. It's a little bitty tiny seed. We're running 10 gallons of water in furrow, 00:00:39 and that really helps us make it fly out of the ground. We can usually get out of the ground in about three days with the water. 00:00:44 Yeah. So that's something we're doing here that's helping us out a ton. Yeah. Who would ever thought 00:00:48 that in furrow water would speed up germination on this stuff? I mean, this stuff's so tiny and it's so oily, 00:00:55 and we've had to fight with our vacuum, getting our vacuum set, and in two days I've, I found some in two days. 00:01:02 We've had, like, we've got a one inch sprout on some, so this stuff's really gonna blow outta the ground. I think we can get it figured out. 00:01:09 Uh, like I said, it's a little bit of a challenge keeping the stuff in the planter with the vacuum. 00:01:13 He is, had to put seals around the belts and the, uh, it's just a whole different animal, but we're looking for a good stand. 00:01:20 I think we're set up for success here. Yeah, I agree. And when will this stuff harvest? 00:01:25 We'll harvest in about 130 days from today. I think we're, that's looking around the end of September from now. 00:01:30 Okay. Uh, should be picking it up. Um, we'll probably run a, a desiccate application over it about, uh, middle of August 46 00:01:37.875 --> 00:01:39.175
