Farming Video | ROI-Boosting 2x2 Tips from Garrett

At a recent field day, Kelly Garrett of XtremeAg teams up with Ryan Harbison from AgroLiquid to break down why a balanced, nutrient-rich 2x2 fertility program delivers better results than just running nitrogen. Kelly shares how his farm loads the 2x2 with sulfur, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and a full suite of micronutrients to boost nitrogen assimilation and improve mineral balance. Ryan explains how 2x2 placement offers more flexibility than in-furrow applications—reducing seed burn, allowing higher rates, and making it easier to feed the crop as it grows. They emphasize that tough fields with poor base saturation are where this approach really pays off, often yielding better ROI than high-performing ground. This is a practical, ROI-driven conversation for any grower looking to get more out of their early fertility pass.

00:00:00 Hi, this is Kelly Gibb from Extreme Ag. We're standing out here at my field day today talking with Ryan Harson of Agro Liquid, 00:00:06 and we're just discussing the importance of the approach of your two by two. Most farmers just wanna put nitrogen in the two by two, 00:00:14 maybe splash a little sulfur in on our farm. It's a wide array. It's, it's almost every nutrient that we can get, all 00:00:20 of the micronutrients because I need to have that balanced approach, you know, the mineral balance that we're trying to seek, 00:00:25 the nitrogen assimilation that we're chasing, things like that. Ryan, what do you find to be important, 00:00:30 good or bad about that approach? So, well, what's great about that approach is that two by two gives you a little bit more flexibility 00:00:35 than some of the in furrow does. So things you've done out here before and done some stuff with us has been zinc and calcium. 00:00:41 Right? That's a great place to put that in with the nitrogen while you're making that pass. That way you can kind of spoon feed 00:00:47 that crop along as you're going. I would agree with you on the approach of the, uh, a little, a little better approach or easier approach. 00:00:53 'cause in furrow we can burn some things, right? Uh, in furrow we can have too big of a rate at times. It's easier to put more gallons out there. Yep. 00:01:00 Easier to put more products out there. We don't have to worry about burning that seed. Yeah. We, uh, we very much try to keep up 00:01:07 with the nitrogen released to the soil here and that those micronutrients are what we need to spoon feed throughout the season. 00:01:12 It all starts with the planter, right. And then it goes on to the sprayer and goes onto the airplane or the drone later on season. 00:01:18 Uh, for me, spoon feeding nitrogen is the last thing I need to do. Right. I need to spoon feed all those micronutrients. 00:01:23 The two by two is a great place to start that job. Well, you know, and you talked about potentially having some seedling in furrow, right? 00:01:29 So this is a great place to put some of that sulfur, some of that potassium. Even some of that phosphorus load can 00:01:34 go with that in that two by two. So it's a very versatile application that you can get a lot of those nutrient needs for that upfront nutrition met 00:01:41 In our soils here. You know, temple and Matt always wanna talk about how great the soil is. 00:01:44 And it is, but it does present some challenges and there are base saturation challenges. Yep. And the ability 00:01:50 and some of these tougher base saturation areas to have available in nutrition is really kind of hard to accomplish at times. 00:01:56 So putting some of that base nutrition in that two by two is a great place to start and keep it available until the plant uses it. 00:02:02 Absolutely. And that, that brings up another great point, right? Using a, using a soil test early to make some 00:02:05 of these determinations, that's another great place to again, stick some of these nutrients to, to help with that deficiency on that soil test to help you get up 00:02:13 and going for that season's crop. I, and I, I think that brings up another great point for growers that two by two is gonna shine more 00:02:20 or have a bigger ROI in a tough field versus a high yield area. Everybody wants to push their high yield areas 00:02:26 or experiment there and it's a lot of fun. Yeah. You know, but if you're looking for an ROI, this kind of applications in a tough base saturation area in your 00:02:34 crappiest field will probably return the most money to your bottom line. 00:02:37.785 --> 00:02:38.665
