Farming Video | Rebuilding an Older Planter to Avoid Spring Downtime

17 Feb 26

Kelly Garrett walks through offseason planter upgrades—fixing worn parts, reinforcing load pins, and adding in-furrow fertility—to cut down on breakdowns this spring.

00:00:00 Good morning, Kelly Garrett from Extreme Mag. We've got one of our planters in the shop, kind of some unusual February weather going on out there. 00:00:06 It feels like it's closer to April 1st than, uh, the middle of February. We'll have to see if it lasts or if it's gonna cool off. 00:00:12 One more time. It's Iowa, so if we wait a few minutes, it could change. Let show you what we're doing on this planter. 00:00:18 We're putting TRVs on as they were wore down below the, uh, the point of where we don't like to run 'em anymore, 00:00:24 we're putting on new seed tube guards, as you can see right here. And the most interesting thing to me 00:00:29 is are these load pins right here. We've installed a thicker washer and the guys welded this spur up here, 00:00:35 so it can't rotate quite so far. And our terrain, we are breaking more of those than we thought, and, uh, 00:00:40 it was causing downtime and things like that. It's a real headache with the hydraulic downforce when the load pin breaks, of course. 00:00:46 So Richie in red and Bryce came up with the idea to shim this up a little further with this thicker washer. And then of course, this little weld right here 00:00:53 to keep this in line. We really think that, uh, that that will improve our planning season because of the, uh, 00:01:00 because of the breakdowns we are experiencing. We're also, uh, having, uh, pre-made some new fertilizer tubes that are gonna come down 00:01:10 and they'll, it'll be behind the seed tube right here for the, uh, infer fertility that's going on. And this is our older planter. 00:01:17 And so we're gonna rebuild it here one more time, run it a few more seasons, but before we have to trade it off. 00:01:22 But, uh, it should be just about like brand new when the 00:01:25.845 --> 00:01:27.005
