Farming Video | Why Broadcast KCL Doesn't Work: Fixing Potassium Deficiency Right

26 Aug 253m 4s

Johnny Verell teams up with Tommy Roach at Kevin Matthews’ field to dive into the real-world problems growers face with potassium (K) deficiency. Tommy, after attending seven field days, shares that K, zinc, manganese, and boron are the most common nutrient deficiencies he sees—and highlights how throwing out dry KCL, especially mid-season, just doesn’t cut it. Instead, the duo stresses using soluble, available nutrition and building a balanced fertility program that supports crop performance throughout the season. With tissue samples improving and results coming in, they share what’s working now—and what to plan for next year.

00:00:00 Johnny Verell at Stream Ag. I'm out here today with Tommy Roach. We're out here at Kevin Matthews Field A 00:00:05 and you know, I was walking around, I asked Tommy, I said, Tommy, how many field days have you been to this year? 00:00:09 Five with y'all and two other ones. So seven, seven. He said seven field days, you know, and I was asking, I said, what's the most common nutrient 00:00:15 you always see deficient? So I sound like a broken record. But most of the time you're gonna see K deficiency. 00:00:24 Most of the time you're gonna see zinc deficiency, maybe manganese, maybe boron. But they all have something in common. 00:00:33 And you know, most people deal with K up front. Yep. They throw out dry KCL think that's gonna take care of the problem. 00:00:41 You especially get down south and we talked to this about your field day two days ago, even a lot of people will apply in season broadcast 00:00:50 dry KCL to take care of K needs in the season. Yeah. They ain't gonna do no good. No. Never be available. Now we can talk about it planning for next year 00:01:01 'cause you're not going to put uh, broadcast K right now, but next year don't even try that 00:01:06 because you're not gonna get any benefit of doing that. You've got to use something that is available soluble, can help balance nutrition that, 00:01:16 that we always see problems with And get it in the plant that's right when we need it. And that's the big thing I've learned this year, working 00:01:21 with you on a few things, is what products we're able to put out there to address those needs throughout the season. 00:01:27 Especially late season like we're getting into here with Kevin And, and I would say this planning for next year, uh, 00:01:34 something that people, a trap they fall into is target a single nutrient. The third law of physics says if you do something over here, 00:01:43 you're gonna have a reaction over there. So you've got to take a balanced nutrition approach and not just focus on one thing, 00:01:50 but look at a, a holistic approach to take care of plant nutrition in that and apply soluble available nutrition. 00:01:59 And that's what I've been working with Tommy with back home. He was at my field day a couple days ago. 00:02:03 He built me a program start to finish even doing some late season y dropping late season foliar. 00:02:08 And so we're gonna see how it works. The tissue samples are coming back a lot better than they normally do. 00:02:12 We just need a little rainfall back home. Kevin's got mud here. It's kind of disheartening to go from dust. 00:02:16 Oh yeah. But, but that's, we can't control that. But we can control some of these nutrients we're Putting out. And even, even 00:02:21 right now, 'cause we've had this conversation this morning, there's still time to influence the weight of that kernel 00:02:29 or, or have the weight of that bean that's over there. So apply, look at your, look at your K levels, look at your micro levels. 00:02:37 'cause zinc, boron, manganese, copper, late season. Those are what? Boost kernel weight pod. Pod size. Well, Kevin's got some great looking corn here. 00:02:46 He is. Got some awesome looking soybeans. Be interested in how they go out and how they turn out this year for 'em. We 00:02:51 Don't need any hurricanes. No hurricanes last year. I think y'all are in a hurricane right now. They had, we were doing in a tropical storm right now. 78 00:02:57.025 --> 00:02:59.105
