Why I’m Giving Biologicals a Harder Look Next Year

I’ve been hearing about biologicals for a while now—especially when it comes to disease control—but hadn’t really trusted one to go up against my standard fungicide… until this year.

We ran a small plot with VACCIPLANT®, a biological fungicide from UPL, to see what it could do. Unlike the traditional products that target disease directly, this one helps the plant build its own natural defenses. The result? Two extra bushels over my grower standard program.

That might not sound like much, but when you add in less resistance pressure and the fact that it’s promoting plant health naturally, it’s got me thinking. If prices stay where they are and this kind of gain holds true across more acres, I’ll be putting more of this out next year.

We’re always looking for new tools that work. And if this one keeps proving itself, it might just become part of our regular lineup.

00:00 So guys in today's world, you hear a lot about fungicides and you hear a lot about biologicals. 00:00:08 Uh, this year we started working with a company, UPL. They provide a whole array of different products, crop protection products and, 00:00:15 and things that we can use here on the farm. So what we, our test this year on the corn was um, vaca plant, which is a biological fungicide. 00:00:25 So you've got the, you've actually, what it does is it creates a natural defense to allow the plant to be able to defend some 00:00:32 of these diseases off from a biological standpoint instead of your traditional fungicide. 00:00:37 We did pick up a two bushel increase. So not only did we get the two bushel increase, but we're also being able to use a product 00:00:44 that promotes natural defense in the plant instead of having to rely on these regular fungicides 00:00:50 we've been using in years past. They cause resistance, you know, have a lot of problem with not working as well. 00:00:55 They're always having to come out with a new type. Uh, anytime you can take biological activity from your soil or your, your products 00:01:03 and make that work in place of some of the traditional means of how we do this, it's a win-win both ways. 00:01:09 Plus we pick up two bushels in the process. So if you had never tried it before, I can tell you that, you know, 00:01:16 this was a plot scenario, but into the future in the next year, you know, our prices kind of stay where they are. 00:01:23 You know, we'll be looking at more of this because if we can not only pick up a yield, and this was against our grower standard practice 00:01:28 with a normal fungicide. So we did see some very big promise on this 00:01:32.535 --> 00:01:34.595
