Farming Video | Matt Miles Faces Replant Decisions After Heavy Rain Damage

4 Jun 252m 36s

Two months of relentless rain have put Matt Miles in a tough spot with a soybean field that’s now split in three conditions—some near dead, some at R2, and a third needing replant. In this video, Matt walks viewers through the agronomic challenges of managing a field with drastically different crop maturities. From irrigation conflicts to weak roots and recovering buds, it’s a real-time decision-making moment. He asks fellow farmers for input—replant or wait it out?

00:00:00 So guys, here we are again, um, two months later, still dealing with the rain. And I'd love for for you to have some comments on this video 00:00:08 because we're at a loss. Again, as you can see behind me, this 80 acre field, uh, there's about 30 acres here. 00:00:14 I'm standing in, that's, I'm not gonna say they're dead, but they're close to dead. 00:00:20 The other part of the field is approaching R two and then now it's, you know, the first week of June, and we've got a third of the field that 00:00:29 that's gotta be replanting. There's a lot of disadvantages going into this. You know, as far as the replant number one, 00:00:34 you're gonna have two totally different ages of soybeans. Number two, when you're needing to irrigate the older beans, 00:00:41 which are up up top, you're gonna be flooding out the lower end, which are the small beans that don't need any more water. 00:00:47 Anyway, let's just give you a prime example. You know, this is up here on the top of the turn row. Don't mind the coffee beans. 00:00:55 And then as you slide closer to the drainage ditch, That's what we get into. What we've got is we got the bud gone, 00:01:06 and then we've got some little auxiliary buds coming out at the bottom of the plants. 00:01:10 So that's why I'd love to have comments on this video. If y'all been in this situation before. See, this one's got a, a new bud coming out down here. 00:01:19 I guess that would've been at the third node. And then another bud here, and then a little bitty leaf there. 00:01:25 So do we keep these for another week and see what happens? See, this one here has got a little auxiliary 00:01:32 branch coming out here. Uh, roots don't look real good. So question is, what do we do? This field was planted April 15th, so we're looking at, 00:01:42 you know, if we, if was there supposed to be a rain this weekend, it's too wet to get in here now. So if we catch the rain this weekend, 00:01:49 that we probably gonna get, you know, we could be June 15th getting in here. So that 60 days difference, the beans up top are 40 acres, 00:01:57 is our two bees down here are gonna be, you know, really small. That's gonna be really hard to manage. 00:02:03 Um, and this wasn't caused by one particular rain. This was caused by weekly floods or weekly rains, and they stood on the lower end. 00:02:12 So these beans were okay, the first flood, the second flood, as the temperatures rose, things got hotter sitting 00:02:19 underwater and hot water. Um, it just finally kind of finished them off. So we do, I do encourage you to, uh, comment on this video. 00:02:27 Let me know what you think because we're in uncharted 00:02:30.565 --> 00:02:30.765
