Farming Video | Matt Miles Finds 10 Bushels Fighting Nematodes in Corn

19 Mar 26

Most farmers don’t think about nematodes when corn is in the field—but maybe they should. Matt Miles figured corn was mostly just a host crop and not a real yield drag. Then he ran a trial with Vive’s nematode product Averland… and the yield monitor told a different story. The surprise wasn’t just about corn either. What Matt saw has him thinking differently about the entire corn-soy rotation and why this pest might be costing more bushels than most growers realize.

3 Years - Grower Standard Practice

00:00:00 Nematodes are a problem because they damage your roots and they prevent your crop from taking up water and nutrients. 00:00:06 I just learned that in the session. That was with my friend George Huckabee, a Vive Crop protection 00:00:11 and Matt Miles extreme Mag, you did a cool thing in 2025. You did trials on corn 00:00:18 and cotton with their product called aland. You're going to do it next year. Sorry, this year on soybeans. 00:00:24 What excites you about what you saw and what excites you about where we're going? Well, what we did last year, 00:00:28 we've been using it in the cotton since we first found out about it, but what we did last year is they wanted 00:00:33 me to do a trial in corn. And I'm like, well, corn's really a host, but it's, they don't really affect the yield, 00:00:38 or I didn't think it did. I'll show you where I'm wrong. We did the trial, uh, we picked up a 10 bushel increase. 00:00:44 So 10 bushels at $4 is $40 an acre. Right. That's easy math. Yeah. Plus what it done was du reduce the numbers in the 00:00:51 corn instead of them being able to live there and set up home and be there. When we go in the following crop, we were able 00:00:56 to eliminate the numbers in the corn plus pick up yield. If it would've just broke even, it would've been a wind. 00:01:02 Yeah. But it, but it made 10 bush, so on A corn soy rotation, it almost has the, uh, the residual effect is what we're hearing right here. 00:01:09 Yes. Yeah. Uh, and and are nematodes George, worst for soy? What? Which crop? They heard the worst. 00:01:15 They, they hurt pretty much every crop out there. Like they, they all cause pretty similar injury as far as root system and, and, and they inhibit 00:01:21 that root, take a nutrient. So, I mean, I wouldn't say it's any worse than the other crop, but I mean, they are a big problem in soybeans too. 00:01:27 Hence the reason, you know, we've got it labeled for soybeans this year too. It's a soybean CYS is the number one pest 00:01:32 of soybeans out there that reduces yield too. So How do I use this? It's ferrows a liquid inferral. So if time of 00:01:38 Planting At time of planting, Then one time, Yep. You put put it out planting, you can mix it with fertilizer, you can mix it with anything. 00:01:43 You know, we, we have very good compatibility with other products and it just goes right on top of the seed. 00:01:48 No phyto issue. No stand issue, you know. No, no problem with, with the crop. Cotton is not very profitable right now. 00:01:55 And so of the, of the places where you think I can justify it, you gave me a 10 bushel, uh, number on corn. 00:02:00 Uh, did it make money on cotton? Did it make me Yes. We have to have a no side in our area. It don't matter, so we gotta pick one. Yeah. 00:02:07 So this product here is about a third of the cost of what we've Been using. So 00:02:11 if it will just equal in yield, which they've got data proven and it's, it will increase 00:02:15 above the competition even if it just equaled in data. When you're, the ROI, we looked at the ROIA while ago, it's it's way up there compared 00:02:22 to the, you know, the other products. What excites you about soybeans? Looking forward, what are you gonna be looking 00:02:26 for this year? I mean, it's labeled so it's not like it's in a trial phase, but one still first year out. 00:02:31 There's still things you're looking for, right? Yeah. So, so we, we, we have, we've done a lot of research, a lot of data with it too as, 00:02:35 as far as results in the field. But the biggest thing is, is, is giving growers the solution. 00:02:39 We, we've had questions about this, had asked about it for years about having the product for soybeans. We finally got there and I'm, I'm finally, you know, happy 00:02:45 to say, okay, you can use it now. We've got a good product and just getting exposure and experience from the growers are gonna use 00:02:50 It. You see. Do you see you using this across all your acres? Yes. I already use it across all my cotton. 00:02:57 I didn't normally, when I research a product, I do it three years before I make it Grower standard. This product went in grower standard, basically the half 00:03:04 of it in the first year this year. And then the second year was all of it with the soybeans. You ask him which crops it we're, in my opinion, soybeans. 00:03:11 Okay. So to be able to get this labeled in soybeans, we've had zero on the yield monitor in the heavy nematode spots where we didn't have any 00:03:17 kind of amount of sight on it. So it's gonna be a game changer for us. All Right. Well stay tuned. That product 00:03:21 is called ABER Land's. From our friends at Vibe Crop Protection, he's George Huckabee. He's Matt Miles. I'm Dave Mason coming at you from the floor 00:03:27 of Commodity Classic and the Extre AG booth. 00:03:29.925 --> 00:03:30.805
