Farming Video | Can Real-Time Leaf Testing Save You Money on the Farm?
At the Miles Farm Field Day Matt Miles teams up with Garrett Hensley to showcase an on-demand tissue analysis tool from Leaf Tech in partnership with Concept AgriTek. This cutting-edge device allows farmers to scan plant tissue—like soybean, cotton, or corn leaves—and get nutrient results in just a few hours via Bluetooth connection to their phone. The tool helps farmers make faster, more informed fertility decisions, saving money and time while ensuring crops get what they need, when they need it.

00:00:00 I am holding an on demand tissue analysis tool by Leaf Tech and partnership with our friends at Concept Agritech. 00:00:08 I'm standing next to Garrett Hensley and Matt Miles at the Miles Farm Field Day in McGee, Arkansas. 00:00:14 This thing, at first, Matt got all geeked out about it, said We gotta show 'em this. I thought it was a view master. 00:00:19 I thought it was one of those things like when I was a kid where I put stuff in there. 00:00:22 But turns out it's a very valuable tool, can help you make important decisions on your farm. And as Matt said, we're not using 1940s 00:00:29 concepts and technology anymore. We're using stuff like this. What is this? How does it work and why do I need it? 00:00:34 This is a tissue analysis tool. So what we do is we are able to scan tissue with it and you know, traditional tissue analysis will come back if 00:00:43 you send 'em on a Monday, you may have 'em on a Thursday. We can have tissue analysis in four hours. 00:00:47 What we do is, is open this up. Right. Once it's turned on we take our, Is it a soybean leaf right off 00:00:52 of this plant behind us? Yeah. Yeah. And then you can use cotton. We've used it on corn in the past as well too. Right. 00:00:57 Crop any, so you take it, you set it in there, make sure it's nice and flat. Okay. This is like 00:01:03 battery operated, like my cordless drill. Yes sir. Absolutely. Yeah. It's easy Plugged, it's not plugged into my computer, 00:01:07 it's not plugged into an extension cord. It's just as simple as that. Bluetooth To your phone. Bluetooth 00:01:11 Into my phone. And so All you do is you get on the app, you click scan. When you click scan on the app, 00:01:17 it will take about five seconds to scan it and you're done. Two hours you'll have it. So normally 00:01:22 what we do is we'll take 15 or 20 samples out within the fields or in your corn fields like we did 00:01:28 and just to get a more accurate representation. Alright. So You said take about how many samples, Garrett? About 00:01:33 15 or 20 is what we're Per field per basically decision making. It's got like SAP or anything else. Is this the next thing? 00:01:40 I mean, sending samples off to a lab. Used to be tissue samples, took you a week or two and it was SAP sampling. 00:01:46 Like, uh, the guys like, uh, uh, you know, Evans talks about is this replace all that? 00:01:50 Well I don't know if necessarily they were replace SAP sampling. 'cause that's a whole different way of doing it. 00:01:54 You're using old leaves and new leaves. This is revolutionary for a person like me. We do a lot of tissue samples 00:02:00 and try to stay ahead of those demand curves with our nutrients that we buy from them. Yeah. Right. So if we send that sample off, 00:02:06 we get it on Monday, we send it off, we don't get it back to Thursday. What if we need to spray on Tuesday? 00:02:10 Right. Prime example, we had terrible weather. We didn't get all our nitrogen out. I started panicking. They brought the, they brought that scanner down there. 00:02:17 We went to all my fields that I didn't have enough nitrogen on. I thought they all looked good. 00:02:22 So I mean it's instant, you know, everything in this world now is instant. The thing Is this, this is like 00:02:27 almost sounds too good to be true, Garrett. Yeah. And, and you know, it's really cool and a big thing. What we've done with this is if you take a test, 00:02:34 I'm gonna use Midwest Labs for example. When you get your analysis back, it's gonna tell you low, sufficient or high. 00:02:41 But those values are based on the millions and millions of tissue tests that they've got in and their averages. 00:02:46 So what we've done here at Concept Agritech is made a value sheet based on yield for what you're seeing. 00:02:53 So we've made a sufficient chart for just your standard production. Yep, yep. And then we've also made one 00:02:59 for higher production stuff. So Real quickly, you're going to, you've already been using this. Mm-hmm. And so this result on what we put in here, 00:03:06 how long is it guy sitting here, Garrett? Oh, it's done. Oh yeah, it's done. Yeah. Yeah. You're good. Yeah, 00:03:10 We take our leaf out and now you've got it on your phone within Two hours, most of the time, 00:03:16 Two hours you're gonna know and then you can go into your office and start making decisions. 00:03:20 Okay. It turns out that soybean is better off than I thought. And we're measuring for everything. 00:03:23 Yes sir. The same things you see on a waters or a Midwest Lab sample Money. I know. We 00:03:28 always have taught money. You're a money guy. Um, this saves a lot of hassle. This saves, we're not sending stuff off. 00:03:33 What about decision making? Have you already used it to save money? Oh Yeah. We've used it to 00:03:37 put less than nitrogen on. Yeah. You know, already. I mean, and just, just having, not having to wait four days to know 00:03:43 what you're gonna put out it. Just say you do it on Monday, you, and you don't get it back to Thursday 00:03:48 and you need to spray on Tuesday. My consultant calls us, Hey, plant bugs are eating you up. You gotta spray what fertility I put out. 00:03:53 Well, I don't know 'cause I don't have a tissue sample. Okay. You can run out there with that. Pop, pop, pop. This is what we need. Add the 00:04:00 right things at the right time. That way you're not wasting money. It also drops pins where you pull a sample. 00:04:05 Okay. I was gonna say, so the traceability, because if I'm out covering as many acres as these guys farm, I'm like, I'm in a lot of places. 00:04:10 So now I know where that leaf came from. So I can say, this leaf came off of this field. I put it in right here. Boom, boom, boom. 00:04:18 And I know it came from this place on Highway 63. Yep. It'll drop a pin every time that you submit a scan, it drops a pin where that scan was done at. 00:04:25 Get me outta here. I think this is a hell of an idea. Yeah. It's It's revolutionary to me. 00:04:28 You know, and what we've seen so far, it hadn't failed yet. They, they've took tissue samples from the lab, 00:04:33 put 'em side by side with those. It's as accurate. It it's as accurate. And the thing is on a tissue sample going in the lab, 00:04:39 you lose during that transit to the lab. This is instant. So this should be better. Yeah. Because instantaneous, he's Matt Miles joined 00:04:46 by our friend, uh, Garrett Hensley. We're at the Miles Farm Field Day, McGee, Arkansas. We're talking about some technology 00:04:51 that's gonna help you make better decisions in real time, which is very important to you 00:04:54 because you know what, we're out here to try and make money and we know that commodity prices are depressed, 00:04:59 bringing the technology, the tools, mostly the information. And we do that at all of our field days. 00:05:02 So check out some of our field days. If you have not been to one, go to Extreme ag.farm and sign up. 00:05:06 We run these through August 21st. This is just the second one of the year. So you know what, you still have time. So next time. 00:05:12 Matt Miles, Garrett Hensley, Dave Mason coming at you 00:05:14.635 --> 00:05:17.085
