Optimizing Rotational Grazing: Overcoming Challenges with Summer Mix Crops

25 Jul 24

Despite his initial excitement, Kelly is disappointed with the slow growth of this summer forage mix. So what happened?

00:00 Molly and I, there she is, Molly and I just let these cows out in the rotational grazing. This will be the first time we let anything out into 00:07 what we call the summer mix. I'm a little disappointed about the sorghum and the faba beans aren't coming very good. 00:13 There's some clovers and things coming. The summer mix just isn't growing like we thought it could be the authority from two years ago. 00:19 It could be the atrazine that we put on last year, the dry weather we had in 22 and 23 could be holding it back. 00:24 The oats are growing nice as well. Maybe the oats are holding it back a little bit. So we're gonna try to graze this down 00:29 and then we'll see what comes back. We're, we're starting on the summer program. It's July 6th today. 00:34 Turn 'em out in the summer mix and now we gonna get into the longer days of summer when the feed for the cow herd is what, uh, 00:41 starts to become scarce. You know, the Broome, the Broome up there in the other paddocks. 00:46 You know, it's just, it's kind of started to go dormant. Now we're to the time of the year 00:49 that's gonna show the whole reason why we did this program, why we're trying to, uh, figure out a better way.
