Farming Video | Kevin Matthews' 50-Hour Claas 8700 Combine Maintenance Routine
Kevin Matthews gives a boots-on-the-ground look at his 50-hour maintenance routine on the Claas 8700 combine. With most grease points handled by the auto lube system, the job’s quick—just a few fittings, chain oil, belt inspections, and blowing out filters. Kevin also walks through checking for moisture in the multi-coupler and shares a critical reminder: blow your machine off every night to prevent fires. With harvest nearing the end and a move to the next farm on deck, this service routine is about keeping things simple, safe, and running right. It’s not flashy—it’s just smart farming.
00:00:00 So we're here today, we're doing our service on our haw 8,700. Uh, the uh, nice thing about this machinist is a 50 hour 00:00:07 service and, uh, takes, uh, my son and I can do it in just a few minutes. It's no big deal. I'm gonna show you the grease fitting 00:00:15 that you got, which is only just a couple blow air filters out, cabin filter engine, air filter, blow them out and then, uh, inspect 00:00:24 and looked at all the belts all the way around and I'll show you the grease fitting. So I'm gonna walk you through where we're at right here. 00:00:32 You're gonna like this. The lube system takes care of the majority of the fittings so you don't have to worry about that. 00:00:39 We're going to unhook this, get it outta the way we're actually moving farms. Um, we're done here. 00:00:47 So we got done the other night, had to move some corn out to have some more storage space from our dryer 00:00:55 so we can get a good running in and wrap this corn harvest up. All right, so we gotta open this panel up right here. 00:01:02 Got a nice little wrench they give you with a eight millimeter Allen head on it that hits about all your access points. 00:01:09 Going to pull that off, get a multi coupler off. Set this over here out of the way. It's always good to check out multi coer. 00:01:21 Make sure they had no water come in that's got into this pipe. If you had excessive rain, sometimes it'll throw a 00:01:27 real sensor, uh, alarm on the solenoid and all it is is it'll be a little bit of dampness in your multi coupler. 00:01:36 Same with other combines like we ran. Got that ready. We're gonna pull this other panel off right here to make it easier to access. 00:01:44 Love having the tracks 'cause I can just step right over on it real safe. Just quarter turn bolts 00:01:56 that panel's laid back outta the way. There's really nothing to do back there other than get that panel laid down and inspect the belt. 00:02:05 One thing we do, we blow these machines off real good every evening. I'm very a**l about that 00:02:12 and I will tell you that is something that you need to do and a lot of fires happen during the night. 00:02:20 We're at dust is set on something hot, everybody's gone home, nobody's there to watch it and come back 00:02:31 and you find out you got a combine fire. Fortunately we hadn't experienced that because we try to do a lot of this preventative maintenance 00:02:39 grease fittings. We got one right here. Got one right here. So that's two. We got two up here on the blower that keeps the 00:02:49 dust from coming out into where you can see better. We're going to check his belts right here. All that's an auto lube system. 00:03:01 We got two chains right here that we're going to this oil. We put a roller chain oil lubricant on there. 00:03:11 I'll tell you, I do them darn near every day. It says 50 hours, but I don't think you can get too much oil on them chains 00:03:19 unless it's slinging it everywhere. Inspector auto Lube we're towards the end of harvest. Uh, as long as we got about two 00:03:25 or three inches in here, we're safe right now. Earlier on, we're gonna keep it about half full, but you wanna leave at pretty low 00:03:33 when you go into your off season and uh, that way when you start your next season, you can put all fresh new grease in there. 00:03:41 We keep our machines in the shed so they're pretty protected. We look at all these belts, everything. 00:03:47 All your tensioners look good. Just a visual inspection come around right here. Um, so back here at our chopper. 00:03:56 This is multi-speed hydraulic control that changes the chopper. Everything from the cab awesome. 00:04:01 Actually this, it's just awesome the way it works. We got two 500 hour fittings right here that are grease fittings. 00:04:08 Again, 500 hours. So this is not a 50 hour fitting. I mean there's just a few others on here besides those four or five 50 hours. 00:04:16 Everything else is under the auto lube. All your axle bushings, bearings, pivot points, everything's auto lube. 00:04:26 We're going around to the other side. All your tensioners here is good. I've already put this panel back on. 00:04:34 I looked at it uh, last night when I blo it off. I got one more chain right here on my telling elevator. And then I've got a chain on top at Cleen Grain Elevator. 00:04:43 Those two chains need oil and so we're on the right side of the machine. 50 yard service, visual inspection, two chains, 00:04:52 the oil telling elevator clean grain elevator. We're gonna move up to the feeder house. We have our barren degrees right here. 00:05:02 Our, uh, tensioner degrees here. So two grease fittings, then got a grease fitting right here on the, uh, blower. 00:05:13 And you can just reach right in here to it from where I'm at. I can reach right there. That's it. That's it. 00:05:19 Clean the windows. VA got a Milwaukee shop vac, vacuum the cab out. I ain't about keeping my cab clean If I'm gonna set in it 00:05:27 all day, I want my machine clean. I don't like to go sit down in a nasty chair at the house and a dirty floor. 00:05:33 So we keep the house clean. This is my house in Har in harvest season. We sit in these things numerous hours just like the rest 00:05:42 of you guys and ladies do. So we like to keep it clean. It's also good for your health. One other thing is you may want to check your rock trap 00:05:52 and um, this lever right here works. See it. It's a little bit of A chore to get this rock trap open. 00:05:58 With corn, soybeans, it opens pretty easy, but corn, you, you need two people to do it. Um, or one person in a pry bar to kind of do it. 00:06:07 Sometimes pry bar works better to help pry that other side to bring it evenly so you don't bend anything. 00:06:15 That's a, that is a challenge on it. But other than that, everything else is extremely simple. Saw auto lube, your track system's, auto lube. 00:06:25 Um, just keep greasing your greaser when you come towards the end of harvest. Be sure and minimize the grease that's in there 138 00:06:32.585 --> 00:06:33.925
