Farming Video | Kelly Garrett's Spring Push — Corn, Beans, Cover Crops, and $60 an Acre of Fertility All at Once

30 Apr 26

Kelly Garrett's got every machine running this spring. Watch him break down a $60/acre fertility pass on a rye/triticale cover crop field — including why nitrogen costs this year are making him rethink his rates and lean on sap sampling to fill in the gaps.

00:00:00 Hi, this is Kelly Geer from XtremeAg. Spring is here. A lot going on here today. We have got two corn planters running. We've got the bean drill running. 00:00:10 We're spraying plant food getting finished up. As you can see, there's my cousin Patrick out there. This is the half rye, half triticale field that we'll chop around Memorial Day. 00:00:19 We'll follow it up with sorghum that we'll chop again about Labor Day. 00:00:24 Patrick is out here putting on about $60 an acre worth of fertility. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur is the bulk of it. 00:00:34 There's a PGR in here to help with the appropriate height in the wheat. We don't have that in on the rye. Of course, we want the rye to get tall. 00:00:43 Also, there's some biology in here, Bio-Ag-E and Backbone, of course, what we use. The $60 is about half nitrogen. We're putting on about 30 pounds of 00:00:51 nitrogen, and for us, it's about a dollar a unit. That's a real expense this year, so we cut it back a little bit. We're going to watch our sap samples and see. 00:01:01 We will potentially put some on later in the year. The wheat was all about Feekes five. The triticale is a little ahead of that. 00:01:08 But what a great time with our forecast and the sun. It's warm here today, going to be a warm week. This is a great week to put fertility on this wheat and rye 00:01:17 crop. And it's awful busy here today, and I get pretty excited this time of year. It's fun when everything's turning green and starting to grow. 00:01:26 I hope everybody has a great planting season. Stay safe out there. A lot of long hours coming, and I wish you the 00:01:33.939 --> 00:01:39.099
