Farming Video | Why Kelly Garrett’s Fired Up About Soybeans (Finally)

Kelly Garrett is digging into soybean yield data and finally feeling fired up about beans. Historically, soybeans haven’t been his strong suit, but after teaming up with Mike Evans for some deep research, he’s seeing results.

00:00 Hi, this is Kelly Garrett from Extreme Ag sitting here in the office today looking at some yield data making 00:00:06 plans for next year. One of the things I'm really excited about is soybeans. Uh, that's something that, uh, 00:00:12 I've not said many very many times 'cause I don't think I'm a very good soybean farmer, but we continue to research it this year on soybeans. 00:00:19 Mike Evans and I really had some in-depth research, and the three nutrients that really continued to stand out that were needed were calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. 00:00:29 Now, along with a whole host of other micronutrients and things like that, to balance that plant, assimilate that nitrogen that I've talked about many times, 00:00:37 the calcium, the magnesium, and the sulfur. And we applied them in a couple areas a few times, you know, like three times we made like three passes 00:00:45 and we would continue to take SAP samples and after the application we would get the levels up in the operating limits where we wanted it 00:00:52 to be, and then it would fall out. Um, and those levels would fall out. We could not maintain them. 00:00:57 Uh, interestingly enough, and this is what I'm excited about, uh, speaking with Temple the other day, 00:01:02 he talked about using a new product from Nature's called Detour. Interestingly enough, Tommy Roach 00:01:07 of Nature's made the product detour. It's got a lot of different nutrients in it, the calcium, the Magda, sulfur, many micronutrients that is ic, nice load 00:01:15 of sulfur, nice load of magnesium. Uh, Tommy made that because of what Chad and Temple were talking about using on their crops. 00:01:24 And so Tommy just made a, Tommy made a pre-mix that's really easy for us to use. Really helps, uh, when you don't have to do a lot of mixing. 00:01:31 Of course, detour again has a really nice load of calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, along with a whole host 00:01:37 of other micronutrients. And Helix and Temple talked about. If you just make one pass with this, 00:01:42 you probably won't see much, but if you make multiple passes, 2, 3, 4 Temple even talked about in one 00:01:48 research area, he made six. Holy cow. Does it really show out? Temple hasn't run a lot of SAP analysis 00:01:54 or things yet, research like that Temple does. What's tried and true with him? Um, I've learned a lot from Temple on Soybeans. 00:02:00 You know, this is the value of extreme ag in the peer group, that it really is. Uh, temple has talked about the more passes he makes, 00:02:06 the better the product shows out and he thinks it builds on each other. Well, I think that really goes along with what Evans 00:02:12 and I saw in the SAP analysis that we really need to get that calcium, magnesium, and sulfur up there. 00:02:18 Um, the one field of beans we had this year made 72 in the area where we had the trials in that field with the calcium, 00:02:23 magnesium, and sulfur. The beans made 87, 15 bushel better than the field average. Um, I thought that was a tremendous statement. 00:02:30 Makes me excited for next year. It makes me even more excited when, uh, when I hear what Temple has to say. 00:02:36 Uh, temple for example, had one trial with magnesium acetate from Nature's had an eight bushel yield advantage. 00:02:42 It just goes to show you the need for secondary nutrients in the crops. It, there's way more to it than NPNK. 00:02:49 The need for the secondary nutrients in these crops is greater than what, uh, I know I anticipated. And I'm excited to use Detour next year in my soybeans. 78 00:02:58.655 --> 00:03:00.255
