We're talking about starting here about April 13th. 00:00:09 I've really tried to adopt the technology on this planter in every way possible to save money. 00:00:16 The John Deere Op Center is one of the biggest things that we can do when you really start to dive into it and how you can use it. 00:00:23 There's a few ways that we try to save dollars per acre with the technology. One would be Mike Evans writing the variable rate 00:00:30 prescription that we send to the Op Center and use for planting. My philosophy is to try to raise a half a pound a 00:00:37 bushel of grain per plant, and if I don't achieve that, then I feel like I'm wasting seed. So you can do the math there. 20,000 seeds per acre is 10,000 00:00:48 pounds of corn. That's still like 178. 24,000 seeds is 12,000 pounds. That's like 212. 00:00:56 And so the amount of seed that we put out there per acre, I think a lot of times a way to save money would be a variable rate prescription. 00:01:03 I average between 24,000 and 34,000 seeds per acre, and that's based on my yield map, which is another source of John Deere Op Center, another source of data that's important to my farm. 00:01:14 My variable rate planning map goes from 24,000 to 34,000, like I just said. Higher yielding areas obviously get more seed, trying to 00:01:22 hit that half a pound an acre. The other way that we're trying to save money now is some newer technology that's just out in the last few years. It's ExactShot. 00:01:30 My in-furrow has been really pared down because of the cost and because we're determining really what makes money on this farm, 00:01:38 and more and more fertility is being put on with the airplane, put on with the drone or the helicopter in the R stages, whereas before we had quite 00:01:46 a large budget for the in-furrow on the planter. Now, like I said, we've really pared that down. There's some biology, of course, going to be some insecticide for the corn on corn 00:01:55 acres. Going to be some calcium and zinc is just about the only fertility left on here. And overall, though, it would still cost 00:02:03 $27.50 an acre to apply the fertility in-furrow that I want to apply with my sons and I on our farm.
