As harvest season ramps up, Matt Miles and Jacob Appleberry share vital grain bin safety tips every farmer should hear. In this annual reminder, they highlight real-world lessons from rescue situations and walk through key steps to prevent tragic accidents—like slowing down, wearing proper safety harnesses, turning off running equipment, and never entering a bin alone. Whether you’ve got one combine or ten, nothing is more important than coming home safe.

00:00:00 So guys, I know we do a lot of videos. We do a lot of, you know, partner videos on products that we test. 00:00:06 We do a lot of educational videos. Um, you know, we do some fun videos, but this video that we do try to do every year, you know, 00:00:14 it, it's probably my favorite video and this, this video's about grain bean safety. You know, we're all gonna be going into harvest here soon. 00:00:20 We'll actually be going into harvest in the next two to three weeks. And, you know, a life's way more important than, 00:00:26 than any amount of acres or any amount of yield or anything else that you can do. Jacobs with Live Oak agronomy works with us on Miles Farms. 00:00:34 His passion is, is fire and rescue. Right? Right. And Jacob's gonna give you a few tips, just just another reminder, you know, of, of, of 00:00:42 where you need to be when we start getting in these grain bin, working around these grain bin 00:00:46 and different things that we do. First thing starting off, you know, obviously clean up running grain bin, 00:00:51 make sure there's nothing laying around that's gonna cause you any problems, you know, walking around, trip, anything like that. 00:00:56 I mean, that's, that's kind of low level, but it never hurts to hit that and make sure you're, you know, start off good. 00:01:01 Second thing, and probably more important than that is, is just slow down. I mean, I know it's important. I know you got 00:01:06 however many combines running, all this other stuff going on, but slow down and don't look over the easy, basic stuff 00:01:12 that might get you hurt or might get one of your guys hurt that you're like, man, if I'd just taken five minutes and fixed that, yeah. 00:01:18 That might've solved a lot of my problems past you. A little bit of Right, right. You know, the third thing is, is I know it's a drying 00:01:24 system, but if you put wet grain in, you may not, you're gonna get dry grain out, but it does, the quality of 00:01:30 that grain may not be as good as you want. As you know, drying in dry out. I've been doing this for 14 years. 00:01:35 I'm 38, right after I got outta college, got on department that summer, just so I've been doing this for a while. 00:01:40 I've, I've done, you know, house, house fires, car wrecks, unfortunately two grain bin incidents 00:01:45 where we had to go get two guys. And in both instances it was just somebody that, that was too fast, made an entrance they didn't need 00:01:51 to make, thinking that was the thing to do. And, uh, it turned out really bad for 'em. Don't enter a bin, especially when it's running. 00:01:58 That's what happened in both instances is a bin system was running and people got in 00:02:02 and the grain collapsed underneath them and it, it pulled 'em down and caused problems there. I'm Assuming no safety correct. 00:02:08 No safety harnesses. So if you're going into a bin, first thing, turn it off. Second thing is, if you don't have to go, don't go. 00:02:15 But put a safety harness on and have a have a line going outside and not just some little rope. 00:02:21 Get the right kind of rope and, and the right kind of harness that's gonna take care of you. And then have somebody outside that. 00:02:25 That's their sole job is paying attention to you and making sure your rope is good and making sure your safety system's working right. 00:02:31 Just like whenever we were working in the bins this winter and we, and Lane and Johann had to go in and fix some stuff. 00:02:36 They both had safety lines on, had lights. I was up there above 'em and there was people on the ground ready to go in case something happened. 00:02:42 Just trying to make sure there's no opportunity for, for any kind of problems. Luckily everything was down low. 00:02:47 There wasn't anything moving and things like that. And there was no potential collapse. But you never, 00:02:53 that's not always a possibility for some people. So guys, as Jacob said, you know, you can't stress enough safety. 00:02:59 I'm the world's worst of getting in a hurry. Yeah. You know, I gotta get more done, more acres, done, more, more corn dried soybeans, you know, 00:03:07 whatever you've taught me through some of the things and some of the things I've seen y'all have to go through. Yeah. Slow down. Be patient safety first. Right. 00:03:14 And I know that, you know, I know that kind of sounds corny sometimes. Mm-hmm. But when it comes to being a life, it's a big deal. 00:03:21 So guys, y'all are fixing to go into this season. Be sure to remember if you're going into bin where a safety harness, you know, keep things clean 102 00:03:29.465 --> 00:03:31.965
