Farming Video | First Oat Harvest, Hidden Nitrogen Deficiencies & Fungicide Decisions

00:00 Hi, this is Kelly Gare from XtremeAg, coming to you from the combine. Wheat harvest is done. We're combining oats. 00:00:07 I've talked about this in the effort to bring in more diversity to the farm, better soil health. We're trying to add some crops. 00:00:15 My sons invested in the new oat plants in Albert Lea, Minnesota. So we are combining our first-ever oat crop, and 00:00:24 it's going pretty well. I tried to combine them too soon. They were tough. Holy smokes, were they tough. But we waited six, seven 00:00:32 days, had some hot, dry weather, and now it's rolling along here pretty nice. I'm pretty happy. They're making somewhere north of 100. 00:00:42 I'm in a really good part of the field now. The monitor's flashing 165, 170, so I'm quite happy about that. 00:00:51 But what I wanted to talk about today was it's fungicide season, and we have made an application on our soybeans 00:00:59 using the sap analysis. And we're getting ready to make another one. Just like last year, 00:01:05 calcium, magnesium, and sulfur are what these soybeans are needing. Of course, always potassium in every crop. 00:01:11 But the calcium, magnesium, and sulfur are what I find very interesting. We continue to put that on the soybeans. 00:01:17 In the corn, we've made our first helicopter pass. The only disease that we have is bacterial leaf streak. It's a new one for me. 00:01:27 Evan showed it to me. Fungicide isn't going to help with that. We have kind of spiked up the amount of Bio-A-E that we put in 00:01:34 there. We're looking to see if that will amend or help this bacterial leaf streak at all. No idea. We'll have to report back on that, 00:01:45 but it doesn't look like it's a yield limiting factor yet. But other than that, there's virtually no disease. 00:01:50 Things are pretty nice here in western Iowa. When we go to make the second pass with the helicopter, we'll have to make the call at that time, whether or not fungicide is needed. 00:02:02 Of course, the micros are going in. The potassium is going in. It's been pretty dry here, and so the potassium is kind of falling in the sap analysis. 00:02:11 Of course, it takes moisture in the soil to move potassium around in that crop, and we don't have a lot of moisture. 00:02:19 Other folks have caught some rains. The corn isn't showing a lot of stress yet, but the potassium there has gone down, 00:02:27 and we're worried about a yield limiting factor, even though the corn looks good. The corn hasn't rolled or anything like that because we did have a nice rain 00:02:34 here on July 8th. We haven't really seen much since then. The low nitrogen stuff continues to be very 00:02:43 interesting. I have a field that only has 100 pounds of anhydrous on it. It started to show a little nitrogen deficiency in the sap. 00:02:54 You could not see any to the naked eye with a visual scouting of it, any nitrogen problems. The corn looks great. 00:03:00 But in the sap, there was a little nitrogen deficiency. So Evans put out some Full Send in the helicopter, and there's some nitrogen in that product, 00:03:12 and we are awaiting back the sap analysis of that to see if we raise the analysis or raise the nitrogen 00:03:21 analysis in the sap. That should be coming back later this week. And the ultra-low nitrogen at Chad Gorham's, my 00:03:28 brother-in-law, I've got some 45 and 60-pound nitrogen out. It was a stream bar application. Of course, I learned that from Johnny Verell. 00:03:36 And we planted that corn with no nitrogen on it at all, and then we stream barred that in. That corn now has just started to show a bit of nitrogen deficiency, again, in the 00:03:48 sap. The plant looks great. The plant looks great. To the naked eye, you would never know. But it does 00:03:55 need some. And so we're using Align N from Tidal Grow, and we'll monitor that. The Align N is going to go in tomorrow, actually, and then we will have to 00:04:06 take the sap analysis of that at the beginning of next week and see what those are. I'm very excited to see what these tests are doing. 00:04:14 I think these nitrogen tests with the mineral balance and the nutrient deficiency we're chasing with the cost of inputs, and then, of course, 45Z, these nitrogen tests, 00:04:26 I believe, are the most important trials of my life.
