Farming Video | Fertigating Cotton at Bloom: Why This Timing Matters

21 Jul 26

Cotton doesn't stay in "grow mode" forever—and when blooms start showing up, the crop's priorities change fast. Jason Birkenfeld walks through a Texas Panhandle cotton trial as he fertigates Tidal Grow's Oceanic using a chemigation setup built specifically for side-by-side testing.

00:00:00 Hey, y'all, it's Jason Birkenfeld here. We're out here in the Texas Panhandle at our XtremeAg cotton trial using Tidal Grown's Oceanic. We're getting ready to make a 00:00:10 fertigation application. We're going to go through that setup, but we'll be fertigating a gallon of Oceanic along with our standard 00:00:17 fertilizer program. For this trial, we're only running Oceanic on five zones 00:00:25 in this drip system, so a little bit of extra setup required here, where normally you'd get to blend that right in with the fertilizer in the 00:00:33 tank. So we're going to be applying this trial just using an Agrinject chemigation pump. I do this a lot on trials just 00:00:41 because we're not going to be doing every zone in this field. Normally, you could just blend it right in with your 00:00:47 fertilizer, whatever you're running out of your standard tanks. But in this case, we're going to be using this chemigation unit. 00:00:55 We're going to be putting 28 gallons in and running it through five zones tonight. All right, so the cotton's coming along nicely. 00:01:03 We're starting to see some blooms, which means this cotton's going through a major physiological change where our nutrient sinks change from 00:01:11 leaves, stems, vegetation, into our reproductive parts of the plant. Along with that comes a very big change in nutrient 00:01:20 demand. We're going to see elevated demand for phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, boron, you name it. As well as we need to 00:01:28 be looking at whether our nitrogen is converting from nitrate and ammonium forms into protein. Protein's what makes lint, 00:01:36 and we hit this reproductive stage, that becomes really important. So hopefully with our Oceanic application, we're seeing that 00:01:44 root zone, that rhizosphere improve. We're seeing improved nutrient uptake, stuff like that. But we'll be monitoring this as we have been weekly with Sat, and we'll get to 33 00:01:54.420 --> 00:01:57.300
