Six days after streaming bar nitrogen on Kelly Garrett's winter wheat, Mike Evans from Calibrated Agronomy is already back in the field pulling plant sap samples — and what he's looking for might surprise you. It's not just about whether the nitrogen got applied. It's about whether the plant can actually do anything with it.

Mike Evans here, Calibrated Agronomy, coming to you with an XtremeAg field report out here in this winter wheat field at Kelly's, doing 00:00:06 a little sampling this morning. And I want to go over kind of what we do at Calibrated. The core of Calibrated Agronomy is we do a lot of research, 00:00:17 a lot of data collection, a lot of analytics, really try to validate what we're doing and finding what we call the dysfunction or getting to the 00:00:24 root of the dysfunction of the problem. And we do that with a lot of testing methods. Like I said, I'm out here sap sampling, so I pulled some tissue samples, 00:00:33 plant sap. We'll send those off to the lab, get our reports back. I'm out here about six days after we stream barred on about 00:00:41 30, 40 units of nitrogen. And we put in other minerals. We're looking at potassium and probably most importantly, when we put that nitrogen out there, we 00:00:54 provided the plant with the assimilation tools as we talk about, the sulfur, the carbons, 00:01:00 the proper micros, so that plant can take that nitrogen, turn it into total protein, because that's what 00:01:06 we need it to do. From our data sets a lot at Calibrated, we see a lot of nitrogen we apply on doesn't get through that complete process. 00:01:14 It gets hung up on what we call unprocessed nitrogen. So I'm really out here validating that piece of what we're doing, and just trying to collect more data. 00:01:25 With Kelly's operation, we've had wheat for a while now. We're adding forage for small forage grains for the cows, oats, and building the diversity 00:01:35 and the rotation. So we're trying to essentially up our game as far as management. We do that with the testing. 00:01:40 The other piece I was out here doing earlier is digging in with our partners at Calibrated Soilt Tech Wireless, the soil beacon, putting that 00:01:48 in the ground to measure soil temperature, moisture. This is a dry land field, but we feel it's important to collect that data and look at that environment. 00:01:58 Obviously, we talk a lot about the air environment, rains, sun, droughts. Soil environment's just as critical. Is it too wet? 00:02:07 Is it too dry? When are those inflection points? So we're putting that in there. It's got a little radio antenna, as you can see. It's beaming back to the platform regularly through 00:02:18 the day. So we'll be able to collect that data as we go. Not in here as soon as I wanted to, but we're getting it out here, measure that. 00:02:25 Again, we're out here really intensively sampling this part of the field. Got another site down the hill here at the bottom, a higher producing area we're 00:02:34 pulling samples on. So we're trying to see what the plant's telling us and we'll kind of see what the data provides us.
