Farming Video | How Kevin Matthews Manages Heat Stress Before It Hits

18 Aug 252m 15s

With a brutal heat wave on the horizon, Kevin Matthews isn’t waiting to react—he’s getting proactive. In this video, Kevin walks us through how he’s using Terramar, a foliar stress-management product, to help his corn and soybean crops cope with the pressure.

He’s been applying it during the reproductive stages and seeing a consistent 5° drop in canopy temperature. That’s a big deal when it comes to reducing ethylene and keeping those kernels from aborting during pollination.

00:00:00 By the day in the sprayer, it's pretty much where I live at this time of year. So what are we doing out here today besides the fungicide? 00:00:07 We got a normal program that we're normally doing, but now we've got a lot of heat stress coming in across the United States these next 00:00:14 two weeks and we're getting the turmoil out ahead of time. We've been using Terramar for a couple years now. 00:00:22 We're seeing about a five degree difference in canopy. Temperature is about five degrees lower is what we're seeing. 00:00:29 That's what other universities has proven that's had the product out on their trials as well. And anything we can do to keep that ethylene down in 00:00:40 that plant is certainly going to help during pollination time and also keep from aborting those kernels 00:00:48 and trying to keep building that grain field. Just simply all we're doing is just reduce some managing distress on the plant itself. 00:00:56 Um, pretty cool technology. Gerson is a company that, um, has the product. We picked it up from our nutrient store 00:01:05 and again, like I say, we use it on corn and soybeans, mainly just during the reproductive time. Um, they may be better times to do it, 00:01:15 but we've seen a good return keeping that wet, good and healthy because the fruit, which is the reproduction side, the corn, the soybeans, 00:01:25 even the wheat, any crops, you know, it's facing the stress. When that ethylene rises, it's, 00:01:31 it starts going into fence mode are shut down. So if you're running across your field right now, you got hot weather coming up, I would consider talking 00:01:40 to someone and doing a few trials on your farm. See if you can get the same ROI that we've been able to get. And the best thing that could happen is you spend the money 00:01:49 on it and then the weather turn out real nice and mild and good rain and you don't turn hot and you need it to start with kinda like insurance policy. 00:01:58 But anyhow, pretty good product. We've had a lot of good success and we usually put it on a couple thousand acres at 00:02:05 clean corn soybeans. 00:02:07.025 --> 00:02:09.205
