Farming Video | Matt Miles Eats His Words on Drone Tech in Wet Rice Fields

5 Jun 252m 40s

Matt Miles opens up about how he went from calling drone spraying a gimmick to relying on it in wet conditions where ground rigs couldn’t go. In this honest field update, he explains why sticking to old assumptions almost cost him his spray window. When timing is everything, tech like drones can fill the gap. A must-watch for growers weighing traditional versus new tools.

00:00:00 So guys, I'm gonna venture to say if you're like me, and I'm sure you are, there's been a lot of times you've heard this, the, uh, 00:00:06 term stick your foot in your mouth and this would be one of those times. And I'm sure that, uh, 00:00:12 lane will be laughing his butt off when he looks at this video. But, you know, when new technology comes out, 00:00:19 I'm an old school guy and, uh, sometimes I just don't believe it'll work. And my biggest mistake I make on the farm is saying 00:00:26 that's never gonna work and it's definitely not gonna work on our farm. In this particular situation, 00:00:31 we're talking about the drones. So when the drones first come out, I was like, nah, I don't know if that'll ever work. 00:00:36 They can't spray enough acres. We're spraying two, three gallons an acres, so that's not gonna work either. 00:00:42 And then, uh, we started playing with a few drones and doing a few different things and you know, I had to kind of start taking 00:00:50 that foot out of my mouth a little bit. So today we've got a drone out here working in the rice. It's been very wet. 00:00:55 Y'all hear me whine about it being wet for the last two months since planting season march. The reason why the drone's flying is we've got these 00:01:03 different technologies in this rice where we can control red rice and resistant barnyard grass. But the timing is crucial when it's time 00:01:10 to spray the barnyard grass, the red rice, you've gotta be there when that time happens. So we have some different technologies that we, that we use. 00:01:17 And one of 'em is a visia technology. One of 'em is Max Ace and we've got so much red rice and so much, um, resistant barnyard grass 00:01:26 and those are really sensitive timing things. So, got wet, it's time to put it out. We can't put it out lane work really hard 00:01:33 to get a drone company to come in here and spray. And as you can see behind me some there's, uh, you know, that guy's really smoking it down. 00:01:41 So be careful what you say because a lot of times it will make you have to insert the foot out of your mouth. 00:01:47 The drone's been really great. Um, you know, I think it is something now that will be, you know, there's a, there's a, there's a purpose for it. 00:01:55 Uh, will it out spray a 120 foot boom sprayer? Probably not. But there's certain situations like this one today 00:02:02 where the ground's too wet to be out here spraying and we're able to put this technology out at the right timing. 00:02:08 Without the right timing, we might as well not have the technology. 'cause if we don't get that grass 00:02:13 and the red rice when it's very small, you know, we're really not gonna make it happen. The two to three gallon work, 00:02:18 we're doing three gallon work out here, uh, with that type of drone. And you, you see it in a video, you know, it pushes 00:02:24 that product down in the ground and makes a lot of difference. So anyway, just a little tidbit of, uh, be careful 69 00:02:32.505 --> 00:02:35.115
