Farming Video | Cutting 30 Units of Nitrogen in a Wet Year

28 Aug 26

Heath Huisinga figured cutting 30 units of nitrogen in a wet East Central Illinois season might show up pretty clearly in the corn. What he found when he pulled ears made him come back and check it a second time just to make sure he wasn’t seeing what he wanted to see. With N-Finity in the Y-drop pass and less total N applied, there’s an interesting difference developing between the two treatments—but Heath’s waiting on the combine before calling this one.

00:00 Hey, guys. Heath Husenket here. Checking in on our Agrison Infinity plot. And if you can recall from the last videos, we 00:00:07 actually put this in our Y-drop. We meant to have it go in furrow, but with how wet it's been, we ended up logistically 00:00:15 having to do it in Y-drop. But whenever we put that in our Y-drop, we also cut back on 30 units of nitrogen in the form of UAN 00:00:23 32. And I was actually out here the other day looking at these, and I decided not to shoot this video because I thought it might've been a little too 00:00:30 biased, so I came up here to do it again. Well, I did the same thing, so it turns out I wasn't being biased. But these are the ears from where we cut nitrogen 00:00:39 back in a wet year and added Agrison Infinity, Infinity from Agrison, to our Y-drop pass. And we cut 00:00:49 nitrogen in a wet year. So this is a 20. These are 18s. Really good-looking ears. This is where we had 30 units more of nitrogen, and I think this 00:01:00 one's probably an anomaly, but I don't think you can tell from the camera. This one is an 18. The rest of these are 16s. 00:01:08 And don't get me wrong, these are some really good-looking ears. But what really blew me away was in the wet year, as 00:01:15 we've been wet, I'm sure we had some nitrogen loss. Less nitrogen in the tank with Infinity, to me, produced a healthier plant because it wanted to put out more a round. 00:01:28 So I thought that was really fascinating. I don't know how it'll end up in yield. Our seed rep for this particular seed variety or 00:01:37 hybrid, excuse me, came out and did a yield check. Of course, this one yield checked higher. They used the same kernels per bushel. 00:01:44 And I know that this one will probably have a heavier kernels per bushel just because there's less a round and it's filling in more. 00:01:50 But still, I thought it was really interesting to see the difference in these two. Again, we have been so wet here in East Central Illinois, and it just 00:02:03 really blew my mind. Like I said, this is take two because I thought I was being a little biased. But I'm really excited to get in here. 00:02:09 And just to remind you guys, this has 150 pounds of N applied to it total. In this wet year, I never would've thought I would've saw this where I put on more 00:02:19 nitrogen. Still good-looking ears, but I didn't have Infinity in the tank, and less kernels a round. So, 00:02:27 I don't know. It's going to be really interesting to see. I'm really excited to get the combines in here because I think it's going to be 00:02:32 really good corn. But just some fascinating stuff here and wanted to keep you guys updated. 00:02:37.700 --> 00:02:38.000
