Farming Video | Are You Leaving Nutrients Locked Up in Crop Residue?

1 Jul 26

Today's bigger yields create a good problem—more residue. But that residue is holding valuable nutrients your next crop could use. In this episode of Demco's Agronomy Simplified, Jason Diekevers explains why residue management is becoming more important as tillage decreases and yields climb. The timing of your residue program, what happens right behind the combine, and one overlooked factor that can make biological products perform better are all part of the conversation.

00:00 You're making bigger crops on your farm, which means you have more residue. This residue also contains nutrients. 00:00:06 How do you make these nutrients available for next year's crop? That's what we're talking about. This is Demco's Built to Move series, 00:00:12 simplifying agronomy to help you farm better. It's a big deal, and it's become more and more. More no-till operations, reduced till. 00:00:20 We're in a field right here that was a light vertical till pass was done in the fall. A lot of residue out here. What do we need to 00:00:27 know? I think everybody thinks you combine it, and in the past, you'd till it under. And as you said, no-till is growing, and so 00:00:36 combine- Or reduced till, anyway ... reduced till is, yeah. So when you combine, you're sizing residue. That's the start. Then all of a sudden, you get this whole lineup of biologicals 00:00:45 that break down residue, and everybody's probably tried them and they all say, "Well, they don't work." We've used them quite often on our farm, and what we start 00:00:52 to find out is the quicker you can go behind the combine, number one, better off you are. Timing is huge. 00:00:58 Right behind the combine, you better be rolling. And we're talking about spraying a whole list of different products from different companies that are designed specifically to get your nutrients back 00:01:07 out of this and break this down to make easier planting next year. For the next season, correct. Yep. Free up that nutrition for next year. 00:01:13 You said, before we hit record, something I didn't even know. With these products that are designed to break this residue down, you actually get 00:01:19 a bunch more bang for your buck, but you got to apply it with? Without a food source, the biology that you are throwing out there is going to get 00:01:26 out-competed by the colonies currently existing in your soil. Got it. Okay, so we want to break it down. We've got products to do this. 00:01:32 The sooner the product goes on, right after the combine, the better it is. We really want to 00:01:37 limit the amount of tillage, probably because of all the expense, diesel's six bucks a gallon, whatever. 00:01:42 Erosion. Erosion, et cetera. And then what is your last thought about the residue management? It's increasingly been evident that there's a whole bunch of 00:01:50 nutrients in this that need to get back out there. And this is the best form of nutrient you can feed next year's crop with, not some synthetics. This is the number one product to start with. 00:01:59 Got it. Residue management. You're making bigger crops, therefore more residue. Are you managing it correctly and getting all of that nutrition back for next 00:02:05 year's crop? That's what we're talking about. Thanks for tuning in to Demco's Built to Move series. 00:02:09.900 --> 00:02:11.980
