Farming Video | Can This Planter Really Cut Field-to-Field Downtime?

00:00 Hi, this is Kelly Geer from XtremeAg. I'm really excited to be in St. Ann, Illinois today at the Scott and Travis DeYoung Farm. 00:00:06 I'm here with Travis DeYoung and Adam Baird from Fendt. This all started when we met back at Farm Progress last summer. We're out here today trialing the Momentum planter, the 1050 tractor. 00:00:17 Travis, you were even saying last night when we went out for dinner how easy it is to use it. The hydraulic system, the system in the cab, 00:00:24 how you can fold and unfold. We planted a couple small fields here this morning. You're jumping over the irrigation ditches, the drainage ditches. 00:00:32 Explain to us how easy it is to use it. Correct. So when Adam and I were in the tractor with one another, I asked him, did I have to shut everything down with the sequences, kill all my 00:00:42 hydraulics, or if I could fold with everything still running. He said, "Yep, just fold it right up," everything running. 00:00:49 Got everything folded up, and then I was like, "Well, can I just cross it?" And he's like, "Yeah, we don't have to fold the wings up or anything." So just folded 00:00:56 it up, lifted up our three-point, crossed the ditch, set it down, and then started planting right away. 00:01:01 Yep. It went from probably a five or six-minute fold time with the Deere down- Yep 00:01:07 ... to about 30 seconds, and we were already planting right away, getting in the next field. 00:01:11 Yep. And if you got to move five, six fields a day, and it's five, six, 10 minutes every time, it adds up. And we all know as farmers, our patience 00:01:18 gets thin in the springtime of the year, and we want to go. Right. 00:01:21 And so the easier it is to use, the better experience it is for us. Yep. 00:01:26 Adam, can you explain how the system works a little bit? Yeah, absolutely. So again, a big, efficient planter, 00:01:33 if it's not easy to use, is not very helpful, right? So when we went into the design of this, the features are one touch, and they really integrate with 00:01:44 anything. So the ISOBUS controls, the frame controls, we can assign those one-touch features out to the handle of the tractor however you'd 00:01:51 like to. And again, just like we experienced in the field, the efficiency and the ease of use of that really brings a higher level of 00:01:59 operator experience. Growing up and being around all the planters I have and the different vac systems, when you change seed size, you might have to adjust your vac pressure a little bit. 00:02:09 When we've had a cool spring this year, like this morning it was 45 degrees. Now it's really warming up. It's about time to shed this jacket. 00:02:15 And then the oil temperature changes. As you run the planter throughout the day, the oil temperature changes. And we're used to having to adjust that planter, which affects the stand and the 00:02:24 germination. Have you had to adjust the vac pressure based on oil temp or seed size in this planter? How's it work on this planter? 00:02:32 So we haven't had to adjust any pressure on the vacs yet. So far, we set them. As soon as we got this planter out here, we ran them 00:02:40 up to 28 to 30 psi on the vacs. Figured that'd be good enough for the seed we were planting, which is a PDF, or it's a flat seed from Pioneer. 00:02:51 So I was a little worried at the get-go with the brand new- Mm-hmm 00:02:54 ... Momentum, how is it going to handle a flat seed compared to a round seed? Right. 00:02:57 I was told nothing to worry about. We'll just try the- Which is exactly what I'm talking about, though. Flats or rounds- 00:03:02 Yeah ... are we going to have to adjust? Correct. You know? And with rounds, you're a lot more forgiving on your vac, just because of the ease 00:03:07 of flow with everything. Yep. Flats typically plant a little bit harder. 00:03:14 Since we fired this planter up, we haven't had to adjust anything on the vac side of things or on the oil flow, so there really was minimal 00:03:21 adjustments we had to make on the planter to get good singulation, which we were running 99 to 100% the whole time. 00:03:28 And that was the same experience that we had a couple years ago, just what you described. That's why I wanted to ask it. I find it interesting. 00:03:33 Adam, can you explain what the advantage is of the Fendt system, why it's capable of doing that? 00:03:38 Yep. So from the factory, we use the VSet Precision Planting seed meter across the board, and that meter is extremely forgiving to seed size, seed shape, 00:03:49 all those different things. It's really based around how that seed disc is designed, how the holes are designed, and how that singulator works. 00:03:57 But ultimately, without too much adjustment, without hardly any adjustment as we experienced here, we can run all those shapes and sizes and maintain that 99, 00:04:06 99.5-plus singulation across the board. The other nice thing about it is you see all that feedback in the cab, and you can make those adjustments there. So when you do need a small adjustment, it's nothing 00:04:17 more than make a little tweak here or there. There's no getting out of the cab. There's none of that. So really is a very nice feedback system and a very 00:04:25 simple system to use. It's just another example of Fendt with the ease of use on this planter and really 00:04:30.680 --> 00:04:34.560
