Farming Video | Can This Cotton Recover After a Month of Rain?

7 Jul 26

5+ Years - Grower Standard Practice

00:00:00 Todd Kimbrell here, XtremeAg. Got the AgroLiquid team here. Got Reed and Caleb out here looking at our cotton. We have quite a mess going. I haven't even hardly been able to get to this 00:00:11 cotton in a month. We've had so much rainfall, and I guess we'll dive into what we're doing and what we're seeing. Yeah. Man, 00:00:19 you do have an impressive amount of weeds out here. Yeah. But that's okay. 00:00:24 Nature is nature and so looking to manage this, you're out here spraying herbicide today. Here in another couple of weeks, we'll come back in as these rows start to close 00:00:34 in, and we're looking to do a foliar pass. Looking at our protocol, we've got a couple different applications of our SureK product, so potassium. I'm sure that that's an 00:00:43 issue for you down here- Yes ... in this Trinity River bottom. Yes. 00:00:47 You've used potassium, I'm sure, before. Oh, yeah. You see some benefits there? Yeah. Potassium's huge in cotton, and I've actually had beans here before, but 00:00:56 yes, it's a huge thing. Very underrated product that we don't use enough in cotton, and we've seen big returns on- 00:01:03 Sure ... potassium, so it's huge. And then we also have your starter product in the furrow here on cotton. So if y'all want to talk about that. 00:01:10 Yeah. So our ProGerminator, and we were talking too earlier, this is some interesting soil here in this bottom. 00:01:17 Y'all have got super high calcium. So from that standpoint, we're worried about phosphorus availability and that phosphorus tying up with that calcium in the soil. 00:01:26 And so with our ProGerminator, we're able to keep that phosphorus in a soluble form and slowly release it out to the plant, and so that'll hopefully give us some big benefits as we get through 00:01:39 the middle of the season. For sure. And just to reiterate, I want everybody to know our calcium is 94-ish percent base sat, 00:01:47 so we're extremely heavy, high CCs, 50-plus CCs, high pH. It's a challenge with nutrients, keeping them available to the plant here. 00:01:57 So that's one of the bigger struggles we fight. That and also the water. Yeah. Well, and Caleb, 00:02:04 one of the other things that we've got in one of our upcoming foliar passes is our Liberate calcium product. So you said 94% base saturation calcium, 00:02:12 but you've had some success with our Liberate products. Tell us a little bit about why you felt that that would be a good fit here. Right. So even though you have extremely high calcium in your soil, it 00:02:23 doesn't mean you have a readily available form to get into the plant at certain times of the year. So we've just seen a huge benefit. We actually had that a little bit in the 00:02:33 starter as well with the ProGerm. Cotton seed is very sensitive to needing enough calcium to emerge properly, so we put that in there. 00:02:42 We've seen some stand counts do better when we put the Liberate in there, and so we're also putting out a little bit with the foliar as well, just to even get more in there and help with that quality. 00:02:53 Yeah. No complaints here. Stand is good. We actually cut back on population for economic reasons this year, and I'm very happy with population. And I do run in the furrow. 00:03:04 So we run in the furrow with Keeton's, with the little splitter, so it puts it in the sidewall of the trench. And I am so heavy, the 00:03:11 soil is so heavy, I've never had trouble with it, but I felt super confident with y'all's product and not injuring the seed, and obviously it didn't. 00:03:18 Sure. So we're in good shape here. Yeah. With your high CCs and, of course, with all the environmental issues that you had early on this year, 00:03:27 despite what it looks like maybe behind us, we've had a pretty successful emergence here, and I think you're off to a good start. We just got to have Mother Nature help us keep it 00:03:38 rolling. Agreed. And the weeds are bad. We haven't been able to get here in a month. Yeah. 00:03:41 And I was actually showing them just a little bit ago, the water line. So we plant on a raised bed here, and the water line's right up towards the top of 00:03:49 the bed. So that's how wet it's been in the last month, like crazy. Since we planted, it has just not stopped raining on it. Yeah. 00:03:58 This is the first time, honestly, I've been able to get to this plot in probably a month. So that's how wet it's been. I just couldn't even get here. 00:04:05 But we're starting to see growth, cotton's starting to take off, getting excited about foliars, like what's coming. 00:04:12 Like he said, we want to wait until we get more coverage on the leaf versus the dirt with these foliar products and see if we can kick this thing off and- 00:04:19 Well- ... hopefully make some good cotton. I'm optimistic for the season, despite what you've had to go through so far. 00:04:26 Sure. So yeah. We'll see what goes, for sure. 00:04:29.780 --> 00:04:29.920
