Why I Am Changing My Cover Crop Mix Next Season

Temple Rhodes from XtremeAg discusses the challenges of establishing cover crops and explores potential solutions. This year’s dry conditions led to poor cover crop stands, limiting benefits such as organic matter buildup and improved CEC (cation exchange capacity).

00:00:00 Hey guys, this is Temple from a Stream Ag. Um, let, let's talk about cover crops for just a minute. So this field was planted in cover crops, 00:00:07 uh, back in the fall. And right after we took the corn off, you know, we, we planted our cover crop 00:00:12 and we tried to kind of vertical till the, the, the cover crop in with it. And we get kind of a good stand, 00:00:21 but some years we don't get a very good stand. This year we didn't get a very good stand. As you can see out here behind me, it's mostly stover. 00:00:27 We turned some cows on some cover crop areas. The problem was this year is that it was dry and we didn't get much of a stand. 00:00:34 So it kind of put us way behind. Um, we had a lot of acres that didn't, no cover crop came up at all. 00:00:40 Well, talking to, uh, Kelly Garrett with these guys from bio till, what we're finding out is, is maybe we can go in a little earlier in the season 00:00:48 and maybe we can spread it on, let's say if the corn is like, you know, V eight or so, V seven V eight, and we can go out there 00:00:54 and we can have a multitude of different, um, angles to look at this. You know, it's more of a diverse cover crop program 00:01:00 than what we have here. So what we have here is just clover and a little bit of, uh, cereal grain here, 00:01:06 but we didn't get much of a stand. But if we could have put it in back when corn was V eight, V seven, even V six-ish, 00:01:13 we could have actually had a better cover the entire year. So, you know, maybe that's some of the reasons 00:01:18 that we're not getting the amount of organic matter and we're not really changing our CECs, we're cover crops out here in my soil types 00:01:26 because of that problem. Well, we're gonna change some things next year. Next year we're gonna be looking 00:01:31 at a whole different program. We're gonna be looking at putting it in a little bit earlier, trying to get vegetation out here, trying 00:01:37 to get a massive root system established, trying to help the one crop and then try to help us over the winter as well. 00:01:43 We're gonna keep up with this all year long. 00:01:44.915 --> 00:01:45.795
