Farming Video | $50 Soybean Challenge: Kevin, Johnny & Chad Battle It Out

2 Sep 253m 10s

Kevin Matthews, Johnny Verell, and Chad Henderson take on the $50 Soybean Challenge. Each farmer was paired with an AgroLiquid expert to build the best fertility plan using only $50 for a 2x2 planter application, aiming for that magic 100-bushel yield. Chad focused on Kapitalize, calcium, and doubled down on Micro 500 to boost early growth. Johnny kept it balanced with calcium, SpringUp, iron, and boron. Kevin leveraged fulvic acids to make nutrients more available in his high-mag soils. It's a budget battle of agronomic brains—who will come out on top?

5+ Years - Grower Standard Practice

00:00:00 Alrighty. So we're out here. We've got a challenge this year. Stephanie here with quid, she was uh, kind enough 00:00:06 to set the rules, um, but not nice enough to be on my team. So I'm a little bit concerned about that. 00:00:11 But I do have Clay coming here with me and pretty sharp guy Illinois boy. But we got Chad Henderson here from Alabama. 00:00:18 He wanted to grow some good beans. I said, you're gonna have to leave Alabama. Come up here. This is 00:00:21 The only chance I'm gonna get to grow good beans. I can promise you that because I ain't figured it out at home. 00:00:25 So we got Johnny Verell right here from Jackson, Tennessee. Johnny does a pretty dang on. Good job out there. 00:00:29 I tell you if you ever go to, they Just had to come up here to see rain. Yeah. Yeah. Well I appreciate it 00:00:34 'cause last year everybody wants to know has your crops this year. I said they gonna be double what they were last year. 00:00:38 How you know, I said anything above zero is double. So we're good to go. Stephanie, talk to us a little bit about the 00:00:45 challenge that we got right here. And you, I mean you give a $50 is all we could deal with, but that, you know, in this environment 00:00:50 that's pretty economical, right? We did. So we're looking at a planter application off the seeds. 00:00:54 So like a two by two application for soybeans yield goal a hundred bushel and we gave a $50 per or budget. 00:01:01 So each one of these guys worked with an agro liquid expert and came up with a fertility program for that two 00:01:07 by two placement and we'll see, you know, how it compares when we get to harvest. So on. What I like was a was the capitalize 00:01:13 because we all know it needs K, we need to load the K up first. Okay Then we've been running down this calcium trail, 00:01:19 which you know, Kelly's talked about that before. We all know that if you look, all of us landed on calcium pretty hard 00:01:24 'cause we know the bean plants, you know what it needs on calcium side of it. So we're leaning on that. And then I went 00:01:29 with a big micro pack, you know, I went with most time it's a quart. I went with two quarts of micro 500 who's putting it on the 00:01:34 soil and I wanna get that those micros up and really going. So that was what I chose to get in my $50 range. 00:01:39 And like I said, we come in there like $49 and 98 cents. I remember me and Stephanie talking about it 00:01:44 and we just kept inching the micro 500 up to make my numbers work. But that's what we really like. 00:01:49 I'm gonna take these home with me. Yeah, they're outta your point. I got these, I can't pull 'em outta mine. 00:01:54 And mine went a lot of different, I used the calcium also but I also did spring up and you know it's just a MPK blend. 00:02:00 I came out here with some iron and some boron. 'cause it always seems like with us, especially back in Tennessee, borons always a big 00:02:05 beneficial nutrient be putting out for us. So I stayed under budget. I came in a little bit less than everybody else 00:02:10 but this is the only plot I know of that I was in that I actually put out more products than anybody I usually, usually 00:02:15 That is a good, that is a good point. So when we've done ours, potassium's always been the big deal here on my home turf. 00:02:24 And also with our high mag soils, we're wanting to make everything available and one thing we found is these fulic 00:02:30 and helix is a, is a really big deal 'cause we looked at our soil test levels and sometimes you just can't buy enough fertilizer 00:02:38 to replace what these emix and s can do because the minerals are in the soil. But we gotta get it so the plant can 00:02:43 metabolize and translocate it. And that's why I went with a higher rate of the fulic here and um, it's looking pretty good. 00:02:50 If I can pull a few more of Johnny's plants and um, and Chad's I think I stand a chance of, I think my plants spray. 00:02:57 I think my plants are in the sprayer tracks. Spray tracks. Very, they are sprayer 00:03:00 Tracks. Very possible. Well, We'll see what the results are Gonna be. Fun.
